I stumbled on this one just now, a Salt Spring Island music artist wrote a little ditty about the Queen of Nanaimo on Route 9, including a backstory to begin with. Be sure to listen carfully. This artist actually won a CBC Radio contest for this tune, and even gives another anecdotal footnote at the end, complete with a ferry horn in a Joni Mitchell impression. Enjoy. Someone let Nellie Furtado or Diana Krall know we want a good ferry song in their next albums:) I remember reading once of another singer being "discovered" on the Saltspring Island ferry, but I don't remember her name.

Before Dan has a freak-out, I should acknowledge that he posted this same link, in the "you know you're a ferry freak when...." thread, a couple of days ago. Good find, to both of you.

Hmm, neither seems to have the last name Horn, so I'm guessing she's married Yes, I realize that even though Diana Krall is married she didn't take the surname name of her hubby, Elvis Costello Speaking of meaningful music, I'm honestly really enjoying this coverage of Live Earth. Spinal Tap just left the stage, with a plethra of other well known artists with them for their last tune at Wembley, but much more is on the way from around the world including over one million spectators expected at Rio de Janeiro, a venue of todays concert that almost didn't make it onto the roster. CTV's main network is giving the best highlights, but live feeds can be found on their new stations including Much More Music, Bravo, Star, etc.
Keep those beautiful sights from our ferries that we tend to take for granted in-mind while enjoying all these great artists and their message

Spinal Tap, now there's a great band. Songs like Break like the wind, Flower People, The Majesty of Rock, Big Bottom, etc etc. David St. Hubbins is a mighty fine lead singer, and his name evokes images of the patron-saint of quality footwear. Derek Smalls is a powerful bass player, who provides the drive to the band's sound. In some ways, he reminds me of Waylon Smithers from Simpsons.... Nigel Tufnall is a superb guitar player, although he can get sidetracked and unfocused by small sandwiches. He is also a brilliant technician, who has rigged his amplifier to be "1 louder than '10'".

Not intended to burst any bubbles, but some might recognize atleast two of the members of Spinal Tap from other interesting Canadian musical comedy acts, such as probably the most recent to hit our theatres, A Mighty Wind. You might recognize a few other Canadian greats from this Supposed LP cover

Diana's maternal grandmother and my paternal grandmother were sisters. So is there any chance that when Diana shows up at your next birthday party, you could ask her to write a song about ferries?

I'll see if she & Elvis can lead us in campfire songs at the next ferry-geek campout. ;D Seriously though, our grandmothers' families were large, and so I think I've me her only once or twice in my life.....long ago.

Speaking of ferry music, Clive Quigley--who works for BC Ferries and is famous for his song on the Queen of the North-- allegedly has a CD out called "Manager Overboard" that contains a lot of ferry-related tunes. Does anyone know how to get a hold of it?

My all time favorite ferry song has to be 100.3 the Q's parody called something along the lines of 'sitting in the ferry line'.

I just happened to hear that on the radio on my lunch break today, while listening to The Q....the only other radio station I sort of get with a radio, other than our local station.

You can get that song off of the Q's website if you are so inclined (or at least you used to)
It's one of my favourites too, as well as Langford Man.
Rock101 in vancouver has some pretty good ones as well.

There was another song "The spirit of old Rte 9" about the Queen of Naniamo and the Tsa/Gulf Islands route. Gregg has a copy of "Manager Overboard" Check with him. That CD has been banned on B.C. Ferries.
