Nanaimo Daily News story on possibility of Seaspan Ferries moving from its historic old downtown Nanaimo terminal. My question is that if Seaspan closes this drop-trailer terminal, would the rail dock also close (same berth). If the rail dock closes, then where else would there be a rail dock on Vancouver Island? from HERE That could be the final nail in the coffin for the E&N, can't see them spending the money to buy new land and build a new barge slip just for the few customers the E&N still serves.

I finally have a reason to make a profile. Seaspan Doris at Canada Place this afternoon, a grainy cellphone pic is all the proof I have. Seeing as she has been fitted with a full length solarium there is plenty of room for Mr. Horn to camp out. The car deck has lots of room for motor homes. This looks to be an ideal replacement for the ' Wack on route 40...

Looking at the Seaspan Terminal in Nanaimo on Google Earth today, I noticed a few things that appear to be left over from the C.P.R. days : the little ticket office building, remnants of the circular automobile side loading ramp for the Princess of Vancouver (the curved, yellow curb thing right beside the old wharf), and, most surprising, the numbered vehicle holding lanes on the left of the pic. You'd think those would be long gone by now. Does anyone know what the old ticket office building is used for these days?

Here's my video of my July 7, 2015 early morning visit to watch Seaspan Ferries at Swartz Bay:
- Georgia Link / Arctic Taglu loading and leaving - Princess Superior arriving and unloading
I like the colours in the early morning. This was during the smoky-days of early July on our south coast.
I also like the busy-bee style of the yard-donkey trucks that zip on/off the ferry to do their work.

From the rumours I've heard. The yard in Nanaimo will go to the city for a waterfront park. The rail dock will remain and be used just enough to keep their lease rights. I believe it's something like once every 3/6 months. All other Seaspan traffic will be through Duke Point. When the new vessels arrive they will phase out the old one by one.

A few years ago, Seaspan Ferries bought out the operation of Van Isle Barge. This has resulted in Seaspan having the terminal at Duke Point, which will likely become Seaspan Ferries' main Nanaimo terminal in a couple of years or so. Seaspan got 3 tug-barge units in the deal, although the 3 pusher-tugs are technically still on lease from somewhere else (or at least that's how it used to be). Original thread HERE
