The Sidney and Tsawwassen were hardly modified at all during their lifetimes. Does anyone know why?

:)the first two ferries, Sidney and Tsawwassen were built to the same specfications as mv Coho from where the design came, and as such they had a reduced breadth, which is why they were always hard to load, and as a result all the subseguent fleet was designed with added breadth, which also made these following vessels more suitable for the subsequent rebuilds. that's it in a nutshell! :)mrdot.

Plus, the Sidney Class didnt really need modifying, especially in their later years. They were perfect for routes 7 and 17. Great capacity, both passenger and vehicle-wise. One might even say they were overbuilt for those routes. The Queen of Burnaby sure is... so in another nutshell, there was almost always a route where they fit perfectly. no need to modify ships when they already work great! Other than the dining room and hoistable gallery decks i dont think any major mods were made to the Sidney class.

Other than the dining room and hoistable gallery decks i dont think any major mods were made to the Sidney class. A small clarification... The Sidney & Tsawwassen had fixed gallery decks with hoistable ramps at each end. The configuration was pretty much the same as what you see on the Nanaimo & Burnaby to this day.

What I was referring to is the little hoistable chunky that can be used when traffic is really heavy. I thought they always had the fixed inner gallery deck lanes? Guess not.

I thought they always had the fixed inner gallery deck lanes? Guess not. Correct. The fixed inner gallery deck lanes were a later addition to the Sidney & Tsawwassen. Those inner ramps were the first solution to change the vessel to increase capacity. Regarding the 2nd lane "chunky" additions to the gallery deck: - interesting that those were removed from the Sidney in the late 1990's.
