Here's our thread to discuss this year's refit season. (A bit late since some refits are already underway)
I will mention that the Queen of Coquitlam will be out for an "average" refit this season, in terms of duration, returning to route 2 service for the Thanksgiving weekend. I will leave it to others to continue.....

Tachek is also in refit at Deas as well I believe.
Powell River Queen is also at Deas.
The Bowen Queen is next for a substantial refit when she is done filling in for the Powell River Queen.

Tachek is still at Fraser Shipyard in Queensborough. I might try to get over there for some photos if allowed on site.

I have a day off school and might spend some time around town

Fraser Shipyard said no to a photo visit regarding the Tachek.

Did anyone hear that the Bowen Queen will be replacing the I Sky in mid Jan. to the end of Feb.? Last I checked the travel centre it was like that anyways. (I like to keep track of refits). It will be interesting to see how their traffic management goes, and what commercial vehicle drivers think of it. I think there'll be a few [commercial, especially] overloads over the weekend. But i've read through some of the the Chilliwack thread, and it seems she needs some serious safety upgrades to comply with Transport Canada. I'm assuming the BQ will better be able to keep the schedule, though. What are your predictions?

The BQ is actually a slower vessel, I think the best she usually keeps is around 12.5 knots. Unless they make a revised schedule, she won't be able to keep up.

Wouldent it be better to move the Cumberland to Saltery Bay and have the Bowen replace the Cumberland seeing the Cumberland is bigger than the Bowen?? Or even the Capilano.

Did anyone hear that the Bowen Queen will be replacing the I Sky in mid Jan. to the end of Feb.? That makes no sense whatsoever. As far as I can recall, there hasn't been a vessel that small on route seven for probably more than twenty years, and the Bowen Queen would be totally inadequate, especially for commercial traffic. If they've posted that, it's probably in error. I recently read a BC Ferries spokesman mentioning the Quinitsa eventually moving to Cortes when the Denman cable ferry goes into operation, when in fact the new route 22 docks are being designed to accommodate her there.

This is an interesting note if it is true. We have known for awhile that the Chilliwack after her last delay filled stint on Route 7 would not replace the I-Sky there for a long time. Logically, the Bowen Queen is a suitable replacement in crew size and food service, but not vehicle or overheight capacity in some cases. If overheights were a big issue during the Bowen's time on Route 7, it could lead to more scrutiny from locals that BCF doesn't need more of. Perhaps BCF should reconsider this choice and redeploy Powell River's namesake vessel to her former route for the first time in 20 years. (Though her snack bar would be useless because of that wall they put in )

From what i've seen, the Bowen Queen will be fine, EXCEPT for commercial vehicle traffic. I think it's quite possible that the BQ will run route 7 during the mentioned time. The Island Sky travels really light at that time of year in terms of regular vehicle traffic. Like Ship-Rider 16 said, if it is true, BCF should *seriously* consider bringing in the Powell River Queen instead. I think the PRQ would be better, although she does have a lack of amenities for route 7.

After the numerous sailing waits last fall-winter season when the Cumberland was in refit, I don't expect BCF will be redeploying her in the future, barring any unexpected ship breakdowns.

I know there are a few BCers who don't pay attention to the Washington threads, so for those of you who don't, here's a neat ferry spotting opportunity coming up. WSF's MV Puyallup will be coming to North Vancouver for a drydocking, leaving Anacortes for Vancouver Drydock at 17:00 this Sunday (Nov 20th). The drydocking should last a little less than a week, and she'll be heading back to Eagle Harbour, Washington, on Friday the 25th. See more here: ferriesbc.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=wsf&thread=7769&page=1#137929I may make a point of checking this out!

The Quinitsa is getting a quick refit january 30-february 17. The Kahloke will replace her, and the Tenaka will come down to Hornby with the Tachek going to Cortes.

Well according to the travel centre the Tenaka is filling in for the Kahloke on the Hornby run. I also read a post from The Canadian Viking that Cortes crews prefer the Tachek due to increased speed and higher vehicle capacity.

I've never seen Tenaka there, although that doesn't mean it's never happened. It makes no sense to shift Tenaka south, no matter what somebody said a crewman told him, or what the travel centre says. We'll see. A couple of years ago, a crewman on the Kahloke told me Tenaka had a rotten hull and was going to be retired. Bottom line, the people who take your money in the Sitka coffee bar or who direct your car onboard don't necessarily have any direct line to fleet planning and deployment information.

Re the short-term plan for Tenaka: I contacted the editor of a Cortes Island news-site, and she noted that " The Tenaka is required to provide refit relief on the Hornby run until the first week in July and then she will be laid up until December when we will bring the Tenaka back to Cortes." Neil is smiling... RBI shows the Tenaka on the Denman/Hornby route starting March 11. sccommuter - 1 Neil - 0 ;D

Just checked the travel centre, and it looks like the Mayne Queen will be getting a refit April 4th-May 11th. Perhaps the uncomfortable seating will be replaced...
