In late November I boarded the Q of Tsawwassen at berth 4. I suspect BCF may be trying to minimize costs at TSW Terminal by restricting ship arrivals and departures to berths 3 to 5 where possible. During busy times such as in summer this is likely not possible. I'm honestly curious as to how that would reduce costs.

Re this fine pic taken by T-Terminal: There is a very good chance that I am one of the people on the outside stern deck, on deck #8 or #7. And Karl is likely there too. This is from the Oct.1 2005 positioning cruise, preparing to dock at Tsawwassen's berth #2 (the berth specially built just to hold the QotN )

Usually, in the slow season, one ferry is stored at either berth 1 or 2 meaning you have just one available berth kind of off on its own. Berths 3 to 5 can handle all of the traffic and I would assume the shore crew needed to operate those three berths would be less than the number needed to also operate berth 1 & 2 as well. Conclusion, go with a smaller shore crew and operate berth 3 to 5 only, using the other two for ships not in service. BTW Graham, you could have entered your current sig picture in the banner photo contest for this month. Your photo and the ship are real beauties.

Still, though, don't they base the ammount of shore crew on the number of vessels they handle through the day, not the particular berths used? I'm quite a layman when it comes to the terminal operations, though; I'm probably most ignorant and uneducated about terminals when it comes to running the fleet, so I'm interested in learning more. BTW Graham, you could have entered your current sig picture in the banner photo contest for this month. Your photo and the ship are real beauties. She sure was. Thanks. Re this fine pic taken by T-Terminal: There is a very good chance that I am one of the people on the outside stern deck, on deck #8 or #7. And Karl is likely there too. This is from the Oct.1 2005 positioning cruise, This was actually my first big photoshoot with a "good" camera, as opposed to my last one which was a tiny rectangular point&shoot digital camera. I was even flying solo / didn't have a tripod yet to compensate for the fading light, so you would have seen me scrambling around to try to get the best shots I could like I do now, but with the added spectacle of my trying to find anything solid, from rocks to the scaffolding for the new berth 2 lounge, to get a solid image. This is from the Oct.1 2005 positioning cruise, preparing to dock at Tsawwassen's berth #2 (the berth specially built just to hold the QotN ) BC Ferries must have dropped the ball, as they docked the Queen of the North stern-to at the old Berth 1, beside the 'North's 'specially-built' Berth 2. But on a serious note, here's a short series of photos that I took that evening of the 'North arriving for the second to last time ever at Tsawwassen Terminal. More shots will be added to my new tribute gallery soon, but until then you can find the larger versions of these pics here: s171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/tsawwassenterminal/Queen%20of%20the%20North%20TributeCheers, Graham

That's not the first time that I've messed up on the berth # for that QotN docking. Ooops. Yes I know remember the old wooden piling-supports of berth #1.
I also remember mistakenly saying that the QotN did a 360 degree turn to back into the berth. Of course, it's only a 180-degree turn. However, that was pretty fun to see.

Nice pictures Scott! 3 Cement trucks on a single sailing, there must be some construction happening on Gabriola.
When does Berth 2 open for Buisness at Departure Bay?

Scott, those are some darn good pics of the Oaky there, and berth 2 at DPB is shaping up like berth 1 swartz bay.

Concrete trucks have to keep their drum turning between the plant and the construction site to prevent it from drying up...so I wonder if they would keep their engines running during the trip?

Wow! Now that I've actually seen the Harbourlynx, I understand some of the difficulties involved in the vessel... WSF couldn't make their four-engine versions of the same boat feasible, and trying to run them as a private enterprise would have been fiscally impossible. Even with two engines, I know that's a very expensive boat to run.

Very nice. I'm glad the Capilano is finally getting a nice and thurough refit. Too bad every Ferry doesn't get a good refit like that. Yes, I know, it would cost a heck of alot more.....
Anyways...looking in the background.....Is that the Sir Wilfred Laurier in the drydock as well, but painted Blue???

Ceilings in the control room of the engine room, but not the passenger lounge. I was on the Esquimalt a couple of weeks ago, and I thought, forty years and countless refits later, the thing still looks dumpy and unfinished. Sorry to those who like it.

Except for the colours the Snack Bar area takes me back to when I was a kid and traveling back and forth to the Island. Especially the ceiling lol.

I was down at the beach when she arrived at about 6:30pm. She first discharged at Berth 3 then moved to berth 1 as the Cowichan was arriving. I took pictures which I will upload to my photobucket site when I get more computer time. And no, as you can tell I am not going to make it to the Northern Adventure open house. I will wait and see the pictures when they are posted.

Very skillful drawings, not only of ferries but I also noticed a few renditions of playing cards; very well done. Had I attempted anything of this sort, ferries or otherwise, I guarantee it would end up looking like regurgitated spaghetti. Once I even tried drawing regurgitated spaghetti, even it looked wrong…
