I went to Prince Rupert to do a little ferry watching this weekend. Unfortunately, there was no ferry riding involved, and the weather was not co-operative. Nevertheless, I did get some decent shots of the QPR. These photos were all taken at about 11:30 this morning as the QPR was south bound out of Rupert Harbour en route to Haida Gwaii. These were shot from the beach on Kaien Island, just north of the Ridley Island grain terminal. I hiked along the railway tracks to get to this beach. On this trip I also got photos of the NorAd, and AMHS's Matanuska, with much less help from the North Coast grey & drizzly weather. I also got a couple of nice train pics which I will post later on the appropriate thread. All photos by JST ©[Edit] I must agree with those who say that the mating slugs paint scheme looks particularly bad on the QPR. It would help if they moved the blue stripe on the superstructure down about 10 feet to where it belongs, on the hull, and extending forward all the way to the bow. [/Edit]

Nice photos you have there Duane! I especially like the one of the Surrey with the snowy mountains in the background. For some reason the first website doesn't work for me. Welcome to the forum too.

Unfortunately, the eye tends to focus on the huge copyright notice...

I guess that is the price we pay for those that feel they need to steal other peoples work. Having said that though I have seen many creative ways of putting a watermark on such as a personal logo that could go somewhere without taking up 3/4 of the page.

I have a few photos from my trip on the Nor Ad to share. I dident get any photos of the Nor Ad herselft as it was dark at Port Hardy and Prince Rupert. On the way up I stopped at Campbell River and rode the PRQ over to Quadra and back PRQ in Campbell River Nor Ad car deck not completely full My Cabin Cars tucked in the bow of the Nor Ad Norwegian Cruise Lines Norwegian Sun ahead of us in Grenville Channel And now I was pleased to actually get to see the Queen of Prince Rupert as we neared Prince Rupert around 9:30pm. She was starting out her night trip over to the Charlottes. Here she is passing us No one is really interested in the Nor Ad so I am not gonna post anymore. I am in Terrace right now and will be going on the Francios Lake ferry in the next few days.

Karl, thanks for the dedication in getting PRQ pictures, as well as in posting all your photos, while still on the road.
Have fun at Francois Lake.

Nice Photos Kieran especially the one of the Cowichan leaving HB.
That looks like a fun trip on the Pacific Grace too. (You wouldn't catch me up that high ;D) What was the trip all about? I'm interested if you have any more info on it.

Awesome photos Kieran... were you just the least bit nervous up the mast?
This just reminds me that we should maybe add some sails onto some of the ferries to maybe improve their looks, or at least help to cut fuel costs.

About your thought about adding sails to the ferry it would work with sails but only down wind as in going with the wind youd have to have very large sails .
The one thing I noticed up there is the movement of the vessel is a lot greater and when your 90 to 100 ft up its quiet amazing I will post a picture of looking down later.
I gosta go! saling now ill be back.

Here are two test examples. www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18292644I can't locate a pic of it but there also was a cargo ship that had a couple fiberglass wings down the centre line that used wind power to assist. They were fixed and were more cylindrical than a sail but the same idea.
