Beauty photos, Mr. Marsbar. Look at what I found laying around today. Where can you find this? Well you can find this at the recently opened ( as of a couple of weeks ago) Western Maritime Institute in Ladysmith. Cassidy to be exact actually. This is a new marine training school that offers almost all of the same courses BCIT does, and I will be attending this school in December to finish off my Marine Emergency Duties. This school was once the Elementary school for this area, and was once called "Waterloo Elementary". A bunch of friends of mine were the last few students to attend the school before it was closed down in 2001-2. They're currently in the process of tranforming the gym into a pool, and are still building the fire fighting facilities in the back. So finally there will be another option for a place to get MED B1 and B2, instead of it just being BCIT which has a long waiting list for those classes.

Hear is my picture of that very same life Boat onboard the ferry taken on August 06, 2007 On my way to Ottawa. The Queen of Alberni was taken out of service due to Mech issues which is why she is in the picture at Duke Point.

Thanks for visiting the Galiano cemetery, PSCurr.
Also, I think you've just captured our forum's first image of the CCelebration in Active Pass. Congratulations.

Maybe a dumb question; do the cats still run and are they ever used? Judging by the rust it looks as though they haven't moved in 5 years.

The real ironic thing is that with the price of metals the Cats just sitting there have probably appreciated in value for scrap despite the rust and cosmetic problems they show. I would imagine they start and run some of the systems every month for a bit. Can't imagine the engines just sitting there and not being kept working and lubed.

Their scrap price has certainly increased since WMG bought them. Aluminum goes for a pretty penny these days.
Just so you know, aluminum doesn't rust. Rust is the result of a chemical reaction between oxygen and iron. There is no iron in aluminum, therefore it can't rust. The red marks you see is most likely a form of algae from water run-off. You can see how far the aluminum has corroded though, particularly around the water jets. I very much doubt that anybody will put the money into running these ships again.
Just judging by the lack of attention on the exterior of these ships, I doubt that anybody has bothered to start engines or even do something as trivial as turn them once in a while.

Yeah I knew the Cats were aluminum just hard to tell what some of the discolouration is - thought it was from other fittings etc. that may not be aluminum. I also know where two dissimilar metals touch they can react and cause corrosion. This summer was so damp that for the first time we got some of the red algae here.

Very good picture of the CR Scott, I love how she is defined with the background of the Gulf Islands. Very good shot!

Great Photos. I like that first photo. The sunlight shinging on the CR brings out the beauty in her. The 2nd photo gives me the illusion that the Vancouver has the CR's funnel and name-board. That 3rd one is also pretty cool.

Cool! You know I was kind of hoping that the Renaissance would remain on Route 30 and the Inspiration would be put into Holiday service on Rt 2. This way I would get a chance to have a ride on her.
I would like to see a picture of a coastal ship beside one of the Spirits in dock at Tsawwassen to get a good comparisson of thier size.

Interesting... Myself and member Flugel Horn were on the Queen of Nanaimo's 8:35 sailing from Tsawwassen to the SGI. We connected at Mayne to the Mayne Queen to Swartz Bay and returned on the 2 pm...

Great to see the Queen of Nanaimo hard at work, even though the glory days of 1964 when she was Horseshoe Bay based, the whole ship smelled like a new car. And to ensure that the ship was left in spotless condition for the next watch, my old Chief Steward, Tommy Wheeler would often do a 'white-glove' inspection of some of the damndest areas of the dining room and washrooms, boy..he was a tyrant but a great old mate to work for, An old saltie whose bark was worse than his bite, but in those days, long before the advent of the 'Unions" a busboy, steward, cleaner or cashier ever wanted be a victim of old Tommies bark or bite. Ah the times they were-a-changin..
