For a few weeks Rte 1 and Rte 30 have switched berths at Tsawwassen. Rte 1 is in 3, 30 in 5. I asked around about what's going on and there was no (reasonable/good) answer. For awhile, three or four weeks ago, they were doing work which prevented a Coastal from going into 3 or 5 (depending on the day), but it would appear that has been completed and the crane & barges are working away at 4. It may just be a weekday thing, or at the discretion of the terminal tower, because route 1 ships were using berth 5 for all sailings when I was out last Sunday.

Interesting. Perhaps this is a weekday thing? Did you notice any construction crews working? Given that the work being done today was on some of the walls shared by 4 & 5, or at the minimum are next to 5 there may have been a desire to only deal with 4 or 5 sailings throughout the work day, than 10 or 12.

Not that I noticed... I'll have to review my photos from the day... but there was a barge with a crane on it anchored on the far side of berth 1, and I was sort of wondering what it was doing there.

I didn't know they still used berth 1 or 2 for regular sailings! Isn't it unaccessable from the main vehicle lineup lanes?

I didn't know they still used berth 1 or 2 for regular sailings! Isn't it unaccessable from the main vehicle lineup lanes? Berth #2 at Tsawwassen is recently totally rebuilt, and also has a foot-passenger overhead walkway. It is the main berth for Route-9 to the Gulf Islands. Yes, the route from the holding compound to the berth is unusual (I've seen some cars drive right past the berth and need to back-up!), but it's used every day. Berth #1: I'm not sure if the Bowen Queen uses it regularly in summer, or if Bowen Queen moves over to Berth #2 for loading & unloading. I used Berth #1 for Queen of the North re-positioning cruise in Oct.2005.

All the times I have taken the Bowen Queen from Tsawwassen she has used berth 1 where she ties up! Never seen her use berth 2. I actually remember one time I think I saw her in berth 4 or maybe it was berth 3 at Tsawwassen. That was unusual!

Two new images from Swartz Bay today... watching a good old V-class (Or New West Class) swinging around into berth 1, almost like old times. Remind you of anything you've ever seen or done before?

Seeing as I had another Saturday off I decided to do another route 5 9a and 1 trip. Took the 2:15pm Queen of Cumberland over to Otter Bay where we got off for an hour and waited for the Bowen Queen to arrive from Tsawwassen and Sturdies Bay. Boarded the Bowen Queen for her 3:55pm sailing to Sturdies Bay and Tsawwassen We saw an awesome Whale show just off Sturdies Bay as there was lots of Whale watching tours out there the captain pulled the ship up and everyone watched the show from the port side as we had a few mins to wait anyways for the Mayne Queen to depart Sturdies Bay. After that we pulled in, offloaded 1 car loaded a bunch more then headed off across the strait to Tsawwassen. At this point it was clouding over and getting ready for a Thunderstorm. Arrived at Tsawwassen at 5:50pm then we hung around for a bit. We thought of taking the 9pm back to Swartz But seeing they have changed everything at Tsawwassen and now you can acces the Key unless you have ticket we decided not to wait around so we took the 7pm SOBC back. Some photos from yesterday Queen of New West departing Swartz Bay on her last sailing of the day on a Saturday 2pm., isent that rediculas?? Bowen Queen arriving at Otter Bay Bowen Queen has seen better days Hard to capture but a few Killer Whales off Sturdies Bay A storm is brewing Mayne Queen departs Sturdies Bay C Cel passing Sturdies Bay Celebration, New West and Inspiration at Tsawwassen Inspiration departing Tsawwassen Celebration at Swartz Bay in the evening sun

Dito to that, Funny thou because i was on the Spirit of Vancouver Island at 3 and i saw the bowen queen go by. i was on the bow of the ship taking photos. Great shot of the whales too i tried taking some but they were terrible. Plus the wind was strong so it was almost impossible to hold the camera in my hand.

Went for a rt3 round trip on the Coquitlam today...arrived at HSB a bit early to have some coffee, read the paper, and take in the sights. BTW...the Coquitlam's interior is looking immaculate...the Langdale crew really looks after their ships, and I told them just that! Queens of Surrey and Cowichan arriving, seen throught the masts of vessels at Sewell's marina: Queen of Oak Bay departing berth 2 on her 1510 departure to DB: 3 shots on the Coquitlam before departing HSB on the 1545 sailing to Langdale: Queen of Capilano arriving from her 1510 sailing from Snug Cove: A fully loaded Coquitlam on the 1645 sailing from Langdale:

Here are some pics from July 09 of the wreck of the Robertson II, near Lyall Harbour. I think she sank a few years ago, and we once had a thread on her sinking (it's now in the archives). Here's what she looks like now:

Great photos everyone! It is a good community. a vintage flag flown today from 1958, The Queen of Naniamo on the tidal flats from the Tsawwassen First Nations, and finally a trip through Active Pass on a landing barge to Phillimore Point Galiano Island.

Here are some highlights from my trip on the Island Sky earlier today with Michael (a.k.a. NewFlyer). The Burnaby, still pretty rusty on the sides... Meanwhile, the Island Sky is holding up better... But that Car Deck is unbearable to look at... Take note of the height of the Wake in this photo... On the Gallery Deck... If it weren't for all those wild fires this photo might have been a bit more stunning to look at...nonetheless, it still is... Finally for the first time that day, the sun broke through and managed to stay that way...for a little while. And who says BC Ferries doesn't respect their heritage? You just got to look for the clues... Environmentally friendly, my arse... That's it for the I-Sky... Random Pose Time!...(before Mikey runs down to beat the Cafeteria Rush) And this ends another great trip...

A couple of photos from my trip home yesterday evening. Normally I head back to the Mainland on Sundays, but I stayed on the Mainland for the weekend to officially end my days of roofing, and weekly commuting. Here's a photo of the Cowichan preparing to depart for the 9:05pm sailing out of Departure Bay at Berth 2. She was running a little late, so the Oak Bay glided into Berth 3. A very full load for the second to last sailing of the day. The terminal was still half full by the time the Oak Bay arrived, which meant the final sailing of the day would also be at capacity. Over the past few months, I learned to catch the Oak Bay on the days the Cowichan was running, because she tags close behind the Cowichan, who takes the brunt of the heavy loads, leaving the Oak Bay with whatever is left over. This makes for a more enjoyable sailing for the passengers, but probably not so enjoyable stats for BC Ferries to look at. Passengers pace the decks of the Cowichan as they wait to depart.
