I did a route 1 and 30 trip yesterday starting off with the 10am Queen of New West from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen then I took a very late 12:45pm Coastal Inspiration sailing to Duke Point. We dident leave Tsawwassen till about 1:15pm due to a lifeboat swap they did at Tsawwassen. When I was watching her come in she stopped just off berth 3 and lowered her lifeboat so I was kinda wondering what was going on but the captain came on later and told us why they were late. Now that put us into Duke Point about 3:05pm offloaded and loaded then we left Duke Point about 3:40pm and arrived in Tsawwassen at 5:35pm which had me worrying as a really wanted to be able to make the 6pm Coastal Celebration back to Swartz Bay. But I made it on the 6pm with mins to spare. Arrived in Swartz Bay about 7:45pm as they did a Man Overboard drill just off Swartz Bay which was neat to watch they lowered the lifeboat and took it out then we left them and headed in to Swartz Bay. All in all the weather was better than I had expected so it was a good day for a ferry trip Some photos from yesterday C Cel in Active Pass Queen of New West departing Tsawwassen Queen of Alberni Anyone heard of this? Me thinks they sometimes open deck 5 on the Inspiration if they have large groups C Rennie and Quinsam Queen of Cowichan Queen of New West in Active Pass Lowering the zodiac on the Celebration off they go

Yes..during the summer the kids stay at the camp for a week...they usually arrive on the 1245 sailing from Tsawwassen on Sundays and go home on the 1515 sailing from Duke Point Saturdays. Last summer they would open the TV lounge (referred to by the crew as the Flex Lounge) on deck 5 to be used by the kids only.

Does Quince count as a K-barge or is she something else? She looks like one, but just a bit bigger....

An answer to the question above, the Quinitsa and Quinsam Classify as "Q" Class vessels. And on an unrelated note, the Kuper is a "K" Class, though she could count as a "Mini Q."

Regarding Quinitsa, I'll muddy this further by stating that the river that inspired the ship's name is now spelled with a "K" as Kwinitsa. There's also a railway station museum in Prince Rupert with the same "K" spelling. So it is a K-Klass, in a way.

Where else would a Pagan ferry geek set up Pagan Pride Day in Nanaimo? Does the pentacle represent the 5 sisters of the C-Class? And would an Ankh be a good shape for an anchor? Enquiring minds want to know... ps: how were you magickally able to change the Queen of Oak Bay into the Queen of Surrey? ;D

Wow.. what a total brain fart.. Ankh is actually the ancient Greek root word for anchor, or correctly spelt as Ankhur. Hmm.. Esquimalt - Earth, Vancouver - Air, Victoria – Fire, Sannich - Water and New West in the centre to carry the spirit on… You just may be on to something! lol

Sounds like it was a fun festival, Kam. Good to hear. PS: I saw a pic of you in the Nanaimo Daily News which had an article about that festival.

Here are some photos from my latest trip. It was a bit unfortunate because the SOVI was 30 mins late so we didn't pass anything in Active Pass, and I missed the C Cel because I was in the cafeteria. Anyways here is what I could get. The sun made an attempt to come out as we passed the SOBC. My first pictures of the New West since her refit. And finally the cucumber on her way to the pass. Enjoy!

Mt. Garibaldi is actually a dormant volcano. Yes, it is a composite Cone Volcano, one of the northernmost Volcanoes in the Cascade Range. Other notable Volcanoes in the Cascades include Mt. Baker and Mt. St. Helens (both composite cones)

Yes, I know, it's considered bad form to take photos in washrooms, but the North Island Princess's somewhat grotty little lavatory was empty at the time. This sign made me wonder... is it okay if people just put blunt objects down the sink? Has there been a rash of incidents with Texada's drug addicts disposing of their hypos in the washrooms? I don't know if there are enough weird signs in the BC Ferries world to make up a whole thread, but there are a few around that give one pause for reflection. I noticed one recently in the Duke Point passenger lounge that appeared to warn those parents who might be thinking of depositing their kids down the luggage chute. Do all ferries have these antennae, here on the port side? It looks like they couldn't afford cable TV for the bridge- I recall those on our roof forty years ago. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the North Island Princess the only minor vessel to have its own 'mini-brige', facing aft? I'm assuming that it's because there is zero stern visibility from inside the main bridge when they're backing into Powell River.

That's the G-rate version of sign Neil. There was one at the Quathiaska Cove waiting room that rated at least a PG-13 rating due to certain words (actually words with letters scratched out to form much shorter words). Among other things, it stated BCFerries can refuse passage to anyone under the influence of coho or rugs, or whose conduct is safe or awful, as well as anyone who refuses to pay the scribe or produce roof of payment. In addition, opera vehicles deemed to be in safe condition may also not be carred on board the ferry.

The night watchman has to have some way of getting Hockey Night in Canada you know... Yes, after several "minor" collision with the dolphins, wing walls and other such obstacles to navigation, the decision was made to add the rear console...Thank you "Capt Crunch" for your ability to dislodge people from their feet during docking...actually, I think it was post Capt Crunch that the aft docking console was installed, but I'm sure his legend was instrumental in the decision to install it.

I finally got around to editing a few of the photos I took on the recent "Northern Extravaganza" trip. Klemtu Passage (I think that's what it's called) Klemtu Big House Sunset in Queen Charlotte Sound - This shot currently serves as my desktop background Another sunset shot Aboard the Northern Expedition in the fog Now safe in the shelter of Calvert Island Going around the corner at Boat Bluff (I think...) One last shot of the Canadian Ensign being proudly flown Unfortunately, Photobucket was giving me problems so I had to post them on Fotopic. Fotopic degrades the images if you are using a free account, so that is why the quality is a little sub-par.
