A message for all the BC Ferry employees who are on here. Do you have any advice for applying for the ferries???
I am getting fed up with my job now and I think maybe next year I will apply again at the ferries. You got any advice and what things you would need in order to help your chances of getting on? What kinds of people are the ferries looking for ect... All the information would be great. Would love to work on the Cumbie, even Mayne Queen or Saanich or anything just to get in. Too bad I couldent of done work experience when I was in highschool at the ferries. I know John mentioned he got to on the Capilano for few shifts. He was lucky. I was told I couldent. Ferry employees help me out here.

Obviously I don't work for them, but there is a job posting for anywhere on the BCF site for the summer. Deadline is on March 31st. Think fast, I've never really seen job postings on that site very often. But it could be a good start. jobs.bcferries.bc.ca/details/?postingID=491

I was really disappointed to find out that BC Ferries hasn't posted any jobs with the Co-op office at UBC. Seems like they'd have positions for Mechanical Engineering students like myself.

I have seen job postings on the BC Ferries site but they havent been for the public. They have been for employees only. Unless that has changed now.

Karl, What kind of work are you interested in? I'll assume you want to be on board a vessel. Most shoreside jobs are at a risk of being privatized these days. All new hires are hired on a casual basis. Depending on the location, it can take years to get a regular position. Currently there are casual deckhands in Nanaimo with 10 years service. Most of the casuals are working less than 10 days per month right now. This of course varies from terminal to terminal and from department to department. I'd check with some employees in the area you are interested in to find out how life as a casual is in that area. This is taken from BCF website. Our most sought after positions are listed below. In order to be considered, you must possess the following job specific qualifications.
Deckhand: Marine Emergency Duties certificates (Parts A1, B1, B2) Physical ability to climb ladders, handle ships' lines and move heavy objects Working knowledge of safe work practices and seamanship Ability to respond safely, effectively and expeditiously during an emergency Preference will be given to applicants with previous deckhand experience Preference may be given to applicants holding a Restricted Watchkeeping Mate's or higher certificate Will be required to produce a valid Seafarer's Medical Certificate
Catering Attendant Physical ability to perform a high volume of activities, with dexterity and strength, for prolonged periods of time Ability to respond safely, effectively and expeditiously during an emergency Preference may be given to applicants with: Food Safe Certificate (HACCP) Serving It Right Certificate (a training program from the Province of BC) Superhost Certificate (a training program from Tourism BC) Will be required to produce a valid Seafarer's Medical Certificate
Engine Room Assistant: Experience with machinery or proven mechanical ability Preference given to applicants with diesel engine training at the pre-apprenticeship level Ability to respond safely, effectively and expeditiously during an emergency Will be required to produce a valid Seafarer's Medical Certificate
Hope this is of some help.

Just curious, but is the swimming ability a requirement at BC Ferries?
