Our plane has been out of service since November so today was the first day I was able to get up flying. This thread is for this years aeriel photos A few from today Golden Princess Mayne Queen and NIP at the Esquimalt Drydock. Mayne and NIP are along side the drydock as the Golden Princess is taking up the whole drydock. It was neat seeing a cruise ship and 2 BC Ferries together. Amsterdam first cruise ship of the season to arrive in Victoria Miss Coho departing the inner harbour for Port Angeles Coastal Celebration on route to Swartz Bay Cumberland and Skeena Queen leaving Swartz Bay SOVI departing Swartz Bay [Flugel edit: for word in thread title to be aerial]

I second that - great photos! Yeah, that cruise ship is sure huge, especially in comparison to those little ferries. It looks like cruise season has started. I saw a ship - not sure which one - at the new cruise ship terminal at Pier 90-91 in Seattle this morning.

It's the Amsterdam the one that was in Victoria yesterday as she was going to Seattle.

Ah yes, the 'no money' cruise ship. All of the passengers off that thing always look really unhappy and none of them ever want to spend any money.

It's the Amsterdam the one that was in Victoria yesterday as she was going to Seattle. Oh yeah, looks like you are right. Here's an article on it from KOMO this morning. First cruise ship of the season docks in SeattleSEATTLE (AP) - The first cruise ship of the season has docked in Seattle at the port's new Smith Cove terminal. The Port of Seattle says the Friday morning arrival of Holland America's Amsterdam is the first of 211 calls this year that will bring 800,000 passengers through the city. The port commission says each cruise ship contributes $1.7 million to the local economy. The new $72 million terminal at Pier 91 has two berths that provide electricity to ships so they don't have to run their engines - and pollute the air - to generate power. The terminal serves Holland America, Celebrity, Norwegian, Princess, and Royal Caribbean cruises between Seattle and Alaska. It replaces a cruise ship dock at Terminal 30 that is being returned to cargo ships. www.komonews.com/news/local/43619057.html

Looks like a busy day. I never realized how big those cruise ships are! Nice photo's Karl. Big fat and ugly!! Incredible photos Karl. Just seems to be something about aerial photos... they seem to be particularly well proportioned for cropping to signature or forum header size. You should put more of them on display! or license their use to other forum members, ha-ha.

Great photos Karl. May I suggest getting a Polarizing filter for your camera? It will clear up the haze from shooting through thr windows and most likely will increase the clearity of your aerial photos. Also use a image editor and fix the levels to clear up your current photos haze. Then your photos will be breath taking.

Beauty photos there Karl. Oooh, them's fightin' words Milly. I respect cruise ships as big, beautiful boats... Bigger, fatter and uglier?...? How's that?Sheesh, what do they teach people in art appreciation these days? Sticking a bunch of shapes randomly together and calling the resulting amorphous mass 'a ship' is not beauty... it's seriously lacking in heart and harmony.

Mill Bay, as much as I understand where you're coming from, these days I'm starting to lean more toward New Flyer and Karl's views. The liners of fifty or sixty years ago aren't coming back. There's a new aesthetic about cruise ships and passenger ships in general, and we might as well learn to appreciate it, lest we become cranky old curmudgeons shaking our fists at progress... and you're way too young to be a cranky old curmudgeon. I don't think the new designs necessarily say anything about heart or harmony, and the ships today are probably light years ahead of the old classics in terms of amenities for the people actually travelling on them. It could be argued that we're in the golden age of cruising right now, in terms of how accessible these ships are to people who are far from rich, and what they can offer. I sure don't like all of them, but I'm coming around, somewhat.
Karl, great shots of the contrast between the two ferries and the Princess. I've always thought a vessel like the Mayne Queen seemed fairly substantial when you're standing at one end of the car deck, but, my goodness, she's a water bug compared to the leviathan beside her.
Umm, now, can we get that thread heading corrected, since we've still got eight months to look at it?

While not a Little Mermaid expert by any means, I at least knew that. But getting into that, ruined the silliness to note that above. Call it artistic license but thanks for your concern anyways regarding the Disney accuracy of the forum.

Dontcha know that pilots suffer from increased radiation and other maldies due to the thinner air they breathe. Such is the extent they go through in order to satisfy our travel bugs and in this case our needs for pics of ships from on high.

You're right about the modernity of all these cruise ships. Fits the motif of a golden age to a tee. Get on board the gleaming golden flying saucer, with its luxuriant interior accented by wonderful golden brass trimming. Pour all your gold into the golden casino, or shop the golden alleys of the onboard shopping mall with its golden price tags.
Eat the gleaming golden food prepared in simmering golden deep fryer oil, ingest the golden calories. Live the golden sedentary shipboard lifestyle, lying under the golden sun while turning you skin a crispy golden hue and you're well on you're way to a golden coronary. If you are concerned about living to your golden years, the most strenuous activity on board might be if the ship is blessed with its own putting green, so you can practice your golden swing. But watch out for the strokes, they are even worse than the coronaries.
You're right Neil: sounds pretty golden to me ;D.
