Was reading Transit-Vancouver Yahoo group and Fotopic.net has gone under taking everyones photos and sites as of around 11AM Pacific. If you want help finding a new photo host, I can strongly suggest Smugmug. You can view my site at photos.trevorharrison.com and if you wish (no obligation at all) use the Smugmug link at the bottom and you can get $5 off. Other options are flickr, webshots, MSN photos, etc. Except to see allot of photos off-line on this forum until people update their links to their new photo hosting sites. More info en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FotopicA group for affected users groups.google.co.uk/group/former-fotopic-users

It may not have ceased operations as originally feared. According to this post over at CPTDB, it should be back up and running later today (the wikipedia page says more or less the same thing as I write this).

I hope it comes back, then, cause there were some really excellent photos on some members websites.
The ones I'd most lament losing are Graham's images of the Coho and Sean's pictures of Tenaka.

If this turns out to be the case with Fotopic being done for good, then all of us Fotopic users should raise a big stink about it. Then again, I guess the ones who were using the free accounts won't have much say, but if anyone payed the rediculous fees to recieve the advanced options, I wish you good luck for getting your money back.

Still down as of 6:10PM.
This kind of makes me want to setup ViewBCFerries.com as a photo portal to all the great ferry photos out there (I couldn't host it, as the bandwidth/space would be cost prohibitive, even with ads).

Geez! This is frustrating! If they actually do shut down for good, I'm gonna be super pissed. I've pumped LOTS of money and TIME into my website, and I was really proud of it! I sure hope this isn't permanent

How about we build a combo site for all our photos? Where we all put our photos up. Example: Queen of Tsawwassen with a by line for each users photo? Would that be an idea so we know our photos will always be online?

Would that be an idea so we know our photos will always be online? I think this is a great idea. It would be a lot easier to find everyone's photos in one place, then currently going all over the place. I find myself sometimes trying to remember where I saw a photo. I know of a site that does this for a railroad roster and it seems to work pretty well. Maybe a dumb question, are there any free options to create a website that would suit this purpose, my searching hasn't gotten me anywhere.

I have the domain, but not sure how to pull al the photos from the different sites. Hosting all the photos would cost too much even if I charged. If we want to get serious about it, lets talk about it some more.

Now that was quite a scare, wasn't it? I guess fotopic just had some technical difficulties.

I've actually noticed a number of times now that Fotopic has difficulties. I guess this is just the first time anyone has made a big deal out of it, because it lasted longer this time. It was because of issues like that, and the fact that the price to upgrade was far too rediculous for what you recieve with my near abandonment from Fotopic. Today they sent me a kind message saying that my account has gone dormant because I haven't checked up on it for 6 months. I of course logged in and got it running again. But I wonder how much longer it will really last. My photos are stayin' where they are. I've already paid for their homes.

I just received this E-Mail from Fotopic; Hi there -- This is a short message from all of us at fotopic.net/ - the online photo gallery you are registered with. On Friday 2nd January 2008 photo sharing site Fotopic.net suffered a core equipment failure while upgrading the server and network capacity. As a result of this the Fotopic.net website was unavailable from approximately 9am on Friday 2nd January. Despite our best efforts to resolve the situation the gallery service remained unavailable until approximately 10:30am on Monday 5th January 2008. As a result of this outage we are examining our hosting capability and contingency plans, but wish to assure customers that Fotopic.net has not ceased trading and will be enhancing its services during 2009. No data or images have been lost during this time and all systems are back to normal. We apologise for the situation which was ultimately out of our control, and would like to thank customers for bearing with us. Best regards, Snappy Designs Ltd trading as Fotopic.net fotopic.net
