Since the other Vancouver (or Portland) doesn't really have anything to do with ferries, I'll guess Nanaimo. That's the only big ferry town around given the other three were already done. You got it . I knew it wouldn't take anyone too long to figure it out. It really wasn't all that hard. So, look forward to that one for my August Signature.

Low Light Mike: I like your current signature pic of Nimpkish with a lighthouse in the background. Where did you take it, and what lighthouse is that?

Low Light Mike: I like your current signature pic of Nimpkish with a lighthouse in the background. Where did you take it, and what lighthouse is that? The lighthouse is Cape Mudge lighthouse, on Quadra Island, BC. - I took it from across Discovery Passage, in the south part of Campbell River BC, almost exactly on the 50th Parallel.

June is over, and so begins July. For July, I give you a nice pic of Elwha's sun deck on a beautiful sunny afternoon - very fitting for summer.

Posting my August Signature early because tomorrow morning I will be winging my way to Washington DC on Virgin America. This is the 4th, and last, of my NW city series. So, for August, you get to enjoy a view of Nanaimo as seen from Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park.

There seems to be a bit of a New West theme going on, so I'll join it! Queen of New Westminster outbound from Departure Bay as seen from Giovando Lookout.

How many New West Signatures in this Forum? By my count, four. That number is including ourselves. Could it be the trending signature? I guess we'll see...

Neil claims to lack photo-composition skill, but I present his signature photo as evidence to refute this. - the background is a nice yin-yang style combination of space occupied by Mt. Geoffrey and by the blue sky. - the ferry is nicely placed, with a background that provides easy viewing. - the ferry landing bridge is captured. - the spit in the foreground is familiar to those of us who have been there.

In all honesty, I must protest your kind words, Mr Horn. Several days back, on a rather hot afternoon, I parked near Phipps Point here on Hornby, and walked along the beach to Shingle Spit. I'm on a little mission to walk all the traversable shoreline of the island, and that was one bit I hadn't done. Not a particularly interesting stretch of shore, but I did find this example of yet another eccentric Hornby home... ... as well as a leprechaun hanging from a tree branch, which I knew my Irish-oriented elder daughter would appreciate. When I got to the Spit, I took a fair number of shots of the mighty Kahloke arriving, since I didn't think it had been photographed from there before. Shots of the ferry just floating above the Spit, and a couple of a fisherman trudging along the rocks with the ferry behind... various views that I flattered myself, looked vaguely arty. Then I went into the Thatch pub to cool myself with a pint before the long walk back, and I reviewed my shots. Much to my dismay, virtually every one of them had a crooked horizon. The Kahloke was either struggling upstream, or coasting down hill. And this, from a guy who has snickered at the inability of one young forum member to hold his camera level. So, my signature picture ended up being pretty much the only one that was on an even keel. Some people on this forum go for fancy lenses or mega zoom, or whatever. I want a camera that has one of those little bubble things, like on construction levels. My needs are simple, kind of like my photographic skills.

My needs are simple, kind of like my photographic skills. So, are you saying that the yin-yang effect of the mountain and sky was not a pre-planned background that you had researched using Google Maps street-view, or that you had seen in a meditation vision ? My old tripod actually had a level-bubble. My new tripod doesn't need a level-bubble, because most picnic tables are already perfectly level.

So, my signature picture ended up being pretty much the only one that was on an even keel. This happens to me too!! I have a hard time keeping the horizon level in my pics, and it's so annoying. However, it's pretty easy to straighten photos using photo-editing software. But another thing that annoys me so much is when you're trying to take a close-up shot of a ferry, but you accidentally move the camera so that part of the ferry is cut off at the end. Unfortunately computers can't really fix that. So I try to avoid having that happen by zooming out enough so that there's no way this can happen. I can always crop the photo later so that the ferry fills the whole picture.

For September, my favorite month of the year I will use a picture of my favorite ferry - the Walla Walla - taken a few weeks ago from Argosy's goodtime II:
