I dont know where they wanted it to be - but it was a very fast decision so it couldn't have been a ll that encouraging. Swartz Bay, on the other hand, was BC Ferries first official gong show. They almost went to Sydney, but fuel expenses would have been way larger, and they couldn't have a 2 hour turn time.

They were probably going to build it in White Rock or something.

According to the book "The Ships of British Columbia", they considered locations all the way from Steveston to White Rock. The book "Dogwood Fleet" points out that the closest deep water shore from Active Pass was Point Robberts, which is of course in the U.S.A.
Apparently the deal maker for choosing the native reserve at Tsawwassen was the new four lane highway, leading from Vancouver to Blaine, that was to be located only 7 miles from the reserve.

The deal maker was the reserve where they exprorpriated land with out paying for it. Okay, so that's a little bit of a theory But I bet it had a lot to do with it.

I know that Swartz Bay was not at the top of list - as they BCFS wanted to take over the current Sidney - WSF terminal - but the land around it was prively owned and the family won't sell - so they went on using Swartz Bay.
My Grandfather told me in the early 60's - as I use to fish on the old Sidney government wharf - and walk along the bay home - he mention that this could have been the terminal - where we walked.
I guess back then they didn't treat the First Nation people correctly - but didn't they start to build the causeway in the late 50's - I remeber Roberts Bank been talked about - big problems with it in the late 60's.

The relationship between the Tsawwassen Band and the Municipality of Delta has been sour at times in the past, over various issues, but is currently much better than it has been (Thanks in a large part to Chief Kim Baird).
One initiative helping mend fences is the program to have native people from Tsawwassen take a large role in the soon to be expanded Deltaport (the container terminal that you can see to the north of Tsawwassen terminal).

correction: I meant to speak of the relationship between the band and the municipality, province and port.
