... but I'm curious as to why a ship's engineer would refer to the Coastals as 'Ikea boats'.
Ingvar Kamprad is one of the world's most obscenely rich men, largely through selling mass produced furniture made with cheap materials by vastly underpaid workers in Asian sweatshops. Don't get me wrong- I own Ikea stuff, and I'm often impressed at their ingenious assembly methods and their retailing model... even though it depends partly on that sweatshop labour, and chiselling their union employees here.
I don't think anyone has questioned Flensburger's workmanship, or the quality of their steel. They have a well paid European workforce. The boats have, for the most part, performed well, although they're expensive to operate, but that's partly a product of modern passenger shipping standards that require much more tonnage to carry the same load as the good old C class, or the Vs.
Maybe the engineers who work on them on a daily basis have a different perspective. No meatballs on board... so that can't be it.

It looks like the Rennie is going to be on route 1 tomorrow Nov 11th doing extra sailings. She will then back starting as the #1 boat out of Tsawwassen replacing the SOBC on the 14th of this month right through till Dec 18th! Not too happy about that but not much I can do. Would like to see at least 1 Spirit in full service on route 1. A least it is two boat service. I am going to say keep double Coastal on the route during the low ride ship times and put the Spirits on the busy times of the off-peak season.

When I was on the Coastal Renaissance today deck seven was closed due to high wind; hen we passed the Coastal Celebration the deck seven on her was opened. Do the Coastals close the sun deck when it is wind?

Do the Coastals close the sun deck when it is wind? As you saw today, it depends on a lot of factors. It is the captain's discretion whether or not to open the sun deck.

I was on the SOVI's 6pm sailing out of Tsawwassen tonight and it was not all that windy. I have been on the Celebration when the sun deck has been closed though even due to like ice and slippery decks.

Coastal Renaissance on her normal winter route. I am posting these photos because it shows her with the blue line on route one.

I'd say those are some of your better pictures, Blue Bus Fan. Glad to see you put some more effort into taking pictures on a brighter day, and having a more interesting background in them. Keep it up!

So I suspect my observation is five years late, but on the CR today I literally laughed outloud while standing alone when the welcome announcement featured a heavy accent on the word "Renaissance." So funny, and so silly.
Not to be outdone the White Spot executive chef came on and laughed with an evil tone after saying the word "children" when discussing pirate packs. I'll be sure to notify the police.

I was on the Coastal Renaissance for the 12:00pm sailing today. She had been tied up in Berth 2 when the SOBC switched back to #1 vessel the other day. Today, the Captain decided to load the vessel from Berth 2 since the traffic was light enough for that sailing, however the main deck was pretty well completely full but I don't think anyone was left behind. We departed about 15 mins late since the overhead walkway couldn't be used, and it was single lane loaded from the terminal instead of the usual double lane loading you see on the Major Routes. This was because it's not easy to try and organize a double lane load from the usual Route 1 holding lanes all the way to Berth 2. Not to mention, it's not too often you ever see a Route 1 vessel load in Berth 2 these days. My passenger took this photo for me as we boarded Boarding Coastal Renaissance by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr A look back at the terminal...the sundeck was of course closed today. (The most disappointing factor when riding a Coastal whenever it's windy, or slippery up there) Tsawwaassen Terminal by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr

Isn't there gates on the pickle forks that could be used?

Isn't there gates on the pickle forks that could be used? Yes, but I think the combination of the high tide and Deck 5 being that much higher than the Nanaimo's Deck 4, the overhead wouldn't have worked. I can't remember if this was ever a problem with Berth 2, but when an Overhead ramp is raised as high as it can go, the ramp itself becomes too steep and not safe for passenger transfer.

The Celebration and SOVI are holding in dock. The SOVI is at Tsawwassen and the Celebration at Swartz Bay. The Rennie left Swartz Bay at 5:28pm so she has been obviously holding off Active Pass on this side as there would be no room to go back to Swartz Bay.

What's going on with the renaissance she's up near long harbour and Parker island We think that the Renaissance had some mechanical issues on board that the crew wanted resolved prior to transiting Active Pass. She hung out in Trincomali Channel for about 20 minutes, and then continued her journey to Tsawwassen.

Tonight the Coastal Renaissance was about 20 mins behind the Celebration leaving Tsawwassen for the 7pm departure. The 5pm Celebration departure left at 7:02pm so it is like there was two 7pm departures from Tsawwassen now there will be two 9pm departures from Swartz Bay or fairly close together. The Rennie is taking the route around Piers Island into Swartz Bay which is the outbound route the Spirit's take. I guess waiting for the Celebration to leave as there is not alot of room right now at Swartz Bay with the SOVI tied up too.

Here is a video that I shot from a couple different locations on Gabriola Island, on May 24, 2014.
The 2nd half shows the Coastal Renaissance doing crew drills, in Georgia Strait. Lots of turns and stops/starts.
