Sitting dormant at Tsawwassen as the Coastal Renaissance had taken over duties as the #1 vessel. The SoBC's crew were out along side conducting safety drills. The sewage pipe, the third best way to tell which Spirit you are on. It is only bested by the vessel's name plastered in several area's of the ship, and of course the announcement. A typical view confronting a passenger as they escape the wind. This funnel means business. The British Columbia sky falls behind the SoBC's stern. A bridge, in my opinion, without competition in the fleet. A powerful wake.

Spirit of British Columbia near Swartz Bay Terminal, Vancouver Island - summer 2003 photo © DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr[/size] This is another 'in transition' photo from the camera of my brother, Mr. DOT. The transition is, of course, the livery change from 'Expo' to 'mating slugs'. I am uncertain about the exact location of this photo, and the date, though I know it was after early May 2003. Extra detail on this would be welcome.

Do B.C. Ferries use Pod propulsion systems. Would pods help the Spirits with maneuverability especially during the docking process?

No, they do not. A twin screw ship like the Spirits, does just fine when docking, when one prop is set in reverse while the other is in forward thrust and while using the bow thrusters makes the ship wanting to pivot nicely for ease of docking. Pod systems are used extensively on large cruise ships such as Queen Mary 2 although, she has had numerous problems with them. Other ships with the Pods also need frequent dry docking to fix issues that come up from time-to-time as it's still a fairly new technology.

A Spirits worst nightmare: Getting stuck behind the Skeena Queen while transitting Colbourne Passage by way of Arbutus Island. That's the SOBC following us, while we cruise along at a leisurely 12 knots

:)WCK has been very busy sorting thru all the vast pile of negs. and assorted other work from my past, thanks for all your hard work, as we both navigate this retirement world! Not only has he been entering much of my work on this forum, but also in the shipspotter's site, and I owe him many thanks. :)mrdot.

I disliked those 40th anniversary logos on the funnel, a space typically reserved for a more conservative emblem of a company - whether crest, wordmark, symbol or otherwise. Regardless great flash back to "the good old days."

Regardless great flash back to "the good old days." I agree with you Dane. This was not the first time the dogwood flag came down off the funnel for to an 'event', though. That event - Expo 86. Here is another DOT SoBC shot from the spring of 2001 after the dogwood was restored to its place on the funnel... :)delving further on dane's comments and the dogwood past, and the present review of our ferries, why don't we go back to our first working model of our fleet, as set out by the 'forfathers' and not pretend that we are a pvte. model! why can't we keep our first colours, as have Alaska, and Washington states! if we used their business model, we sure could have trimmed some top hamper, in latter years we have had some pricey head office help! ???mrdot.

I like the Dogwood picture. Nevermind the rest of the politics. I Vote for puting the Dogwood back on the funnel.

The Senior-Spook, seen by me on May 18, 2012. - one of the 2 current BCFerries that I've never been on. Leaving on her 7:00am sailing from Tsawwassen: With Mayne Island in the background. - I'm on SOVI, and we're passing off of Village Bay, so SOBC is kinda late. She's on the west side of Active Pass, with Galiano's west side in the background Arriving at Tsawwassen's berth-5 in the afternoon (hence the sun wrecking my photo), along with the rudder-testing Queen of New Westminster:

If you have never been on the SOBC you should work her into your route 30 1 trip instead of taking the SOVI, lol!

Nice photos, Mr. Horn. ................................................................................................................................. Some rare sights from this afternoon, while the overhead walkway is out of service in Berth 1. The Spirits have been using Berth 2 in the meantime. This is the SOBC rounding Arbutus Island, which is normally the outbound route. This is of course as seen from Swartz Bay Just looking back at Swartz with the Spirit still in Berth 2, as the Skeena departs via Colbourne Pass and Arbutus Island

The Senior-Spook, ... one of the 2 current BCFerries that I've never been on. Oh Mr Horn, how could you? She is the first of her class, could be considered as the 'flag ship' of the fleet, and is arguably (along with her sister) the finest vessel in the fleet. BTW, which other vessel have you managed to avoid so far? Why would I consider the SoBC as the flag ship? Mainly because she is the Spirit of 'British Columbia' and is owned and operated by 'British Columbia' Ferries. In short, she carries the name of the province and the name of the 'company'. And the name 'British Columbia' was chosen by no less than Queen Victoria, whose birthday we are (Coastal) celebrating upon this very day.

The timing of my fun day-trips usually results in an 8:00am or 9:00am departure from Tsawwassen on Route-1, and so I always miss taking the SOBC. And I've never happened to take her by chance on a car trip. The other ship is the Kahloke. Kinda funny that I've ridden the Kwuna, Quadra Queen II and Nimpkish, but not yet the SOBC. ;D I should be able to make a strategic move to ride the SOBC, later this summer.
