Historical? Pre digital at least. These photos are from May 1992. They show the Queen of Lego #1 under construction at yard on River Road, Delta, BC. both photos by JST - aka Wet Coast Kid

I have fond memories of passing that sight a few times at the Vito shipyard along the Fraser River near the A.F. Bridge while travelling along River Road. Thanks. P.S. I like your file names for those 2 pics - "LegoQ"

Another blast from the past. This time back to the Sept. 1992 issue of the Westcoast Mariner. The following scan is taken from the back cover of that magazine. I have scanned it from one of many interesting items in my brother's collection. An artist's rendering of the 'Queen of Lego' - DOT collectionPerhaps the paint scheme shown here looks better that what was actually chosen?

Excellent find!
I've never actually seen the step-by step process of the S class construction. I'm glad you found it.

I've seen that before... they actually at one point had huge posters like that on the actual ferries themselves, but I'm pretty sure i've seen that pamphlet before too, but back when I was a kid, i guess I never realized how valuable those types of historical documents would be. Thanks for posting that for us.

Great Collections of Building History about the Queens of Lego, Jim. An artist's rendering of the 'Queen of Lego' - DOT collectionPerhaps the paint scheme shown here looks better that what was actually chosen? If they had chosen that paint for the Spirits, They would have been the best looking Ferries in the fleet.

Were the Spirit class ships completed on time and on budget?

I have an extensive article on the Spirit of British Columbia in the April '93 edition of Harbour & Shipping, which I won't bother to post as WetCoastKid has already posted a similar one- but according to that article, the Spirit Of BC was on time and on budget, and the Spirit of Vancouver Island was expected to be as well.

Looks like the Spirit of BC is being taken out of service tonight starting with the cancelation of the 7pm sailing from SWB and cancelation of the 9pm from TSW. The Vancouver has its 8pm sailing cancelled so it can replace the Spirit of BC 9pm TSW to SWB.

ummmm, I think you meant the 7 from TSW was cancelled, and the 9pm from SWB. I have heard rumours about some issues with the SOBC's port propeller. This cancellation lends a little bit of credibility to that, I think. The service notice says that she will be back in service for the first sailing tomorrow, so it doesn't look like it's serious enough to warrant drydocking. ================================ Posted Tuesday, August 19, 2008 Print Version The Spirit of British Columbia will be temporarily removed from service on the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay route on the evening of Wednesday, August 20 for maintenance work. As a result, the 7:00 p.m. Spirit of British Columbia sailing out of Tsawwassen and the 8:00 p.m. Queen of Vancouver sailing out of Swartz Bay will be cancelled. The Spirit of British Columbia is expected to return to service for the 7:00 a.m. sailing on Thursday, August 21 departing from Tsawwassen. For reservations or additional sailing information, visit www.bcferries.com or call 1-888- BCFERRY (223-3779).

Murphy's law finally strikes! Wow. Route one going with three ships on a summer weekend and no extra sailings to show for it such as a 2300h or\and 0000h sailing Friday and Sunday. Saturday morning at Tsawwassen is going to be a gong show. This really shows that BCF just does not care about its customers.

They could always bring the Queen of Coquitlam down to route 1. and run the Queen of Cowichan on a route 2/3 interline. I know the C's have to slow down in Active Pass, but it's better to have the sailings than nothing at all.

Hopefully, sainer heads will prevail on Fort Street, but I doubt it.

The C's are useless on Route 1, until the crews have training with Marine Evacuation Chutes. This is why the Tsawwassen based Alberni is going to be replaced by the Vancouver for a little while...due to the crew at Tsawwassen lacking training on MEC. Just wait till next year, when boats start breaking down!

Are there enough Tsawwassen based crew available who have the necessary & up-to-date training to operate a C class on route 1? I am assuming that there are some Transport Canada & internal BCFS requirements that may be difficult to meet.
They should have kept the Esquimalt available through to the end of the Labour Day weekend as a contingency, and in the long term one V (the Saanich) should be kept for the same reason.
Okay, I have a better plan - shift the Alberni to route 1, and replace her on route 30 with the Cowichan. Provide extra service on routes 2 & 3 with the Langdale-based Coquitlam.

You are correct about keeping the Esquimalt until Labour Day. It is amazing and sad that BCF did not think about that.

Does anyone know where the SOBC is having work done at? I can't seem to find her on Siitech, or on webcams at any of the terminals.

well the crews need to be familiar with the marin arc system on the C class boats and i do believe a some tsawwassen based crew are fammed on that.
