They presumably would have stayed (following their regularly scheduled stop) in the berth at Bella Bella to wait for calmer waters in Queen Charlotte sound. They would have had to vacate the berth, however, to allow the Nimpkish in to load traffic for Bella Coola and other central coast ports. They must have opted to anchor in the bay to wait for the berth to be available. Perhaps the anchoring was decided upon as an 'exercise'. I assume the foul up of chains occurred early in the going.

Norad is long, there are wing walls at McLaughlin bay though, maybe they weren't enough to hold the ship, so they deployed the anchors.
Interesting though, id think that if the anchors were used they would be well away from the berth structure.
Cheers,

The anchor was probably used as part of the tie up. If they're planning to spend a great length of time at the dock, they'll tie up the ship and shut the engines down. I've never been do McLaughlin Bay before so I don't know how it's set up. If there's just floating leads alongside the ship there, then it would make sense that the anchor would be used as part of the tie up. The anchor could get tangled up amonst the anchoring chains for the floating leads themselves, since they have their own set of anchors flaked out in every which direction to prevent little movement.

Her bow view real-estate is taken up by private cabins and a playground full of kids who could not care less about the view?

Her bow view real-estate is taken up by private cabins and a playground full of kids who could not care less about the view? A pretty poor waste of prime-view space. That issue has been discussed here since March 2007, and for the first couple of years there was faint-hope that perhaps a renovation would happen during the off-season refit. Now after 4 summers of this ship on our routes, we've pretty much given up on that issue. I don't think we ever discovered the reason (if any) why creating a forward view lounge couldn't be done. No doubt that if it had happened, it would be behind a pass-card-entry door.....

When does the Nor ad go in for her anual re-fit?

There are several different reasons for using the anchor in the berth.
You will always see a crewmember standing by the anchor’s which are ready to let go. For any of the large vessels approaching any dock. This is to use as a drag to control the FWD end of the ship in case of propulsion failure, thrusters failure or strong winds. In this case sounds like strong winds. Once the Anchor is on the bottom it ill slow the bow from drifting or setting down on to leads.
Bella MacLauchlan Bay. Has a floating dock which is anchored in place but still moves the floating leads are anchored in place but still move.
The stern can be secured to the dock but there was no means of securing bow to floating leads last time I was there they held the bow in place by using bow thrusters.
Two reasons to use the anchor in this situation. Both due to strong winds and both due to bow thrusters not strong enough.
1 is to hold bow in place and stop being blown away from dock unlikely this time as ship would be able to leave. This was the case a couple of years ago after a mechanical failure to prevent ship from being blown of berth.
To hold bow in place and prevent ship from blowing against leads and dragging floats anchors to shore. More likely if ship was stuck unable to leave.
A 3rd possibility is to drop anchor well of berth and use partly to control approach but more to use to pull bow out from berth against wind or current in case of thrusters failure or not strong enough to counter wind..

When does the Nor ad go in for her anual re-fit? The NorEx is supposed to replace the NorAd as of the end of March. The timing is dependant on completion of the new berth & terminal at Klemtu. So I expect you will see the lovely Northern Adventure at Deas Dock in April. It is due back in service as of about mid-May.

:)your norad shots just posted are neet, the nite shot masking the present day livery of your other shot. Just looking at the present forum header, and thinking those passengers looking out on deck of Kalakla, about to go out on Juan de Fuca, would be likely facing a norad like bumpy ride, once out on the strait! EG's view of old Victoria is very evocative! :)mrdot.

Hi all, just registered so I could share this picture of the Northern Adventure at anchor in English Bay tonight. Apparently she's there after some refit work and waiting for a favourable tide... Attachments:

There's got to be some 'lolferries' ideas in those shots of all those tugs buzzing around the NorAd. Thanks for that photo essay, Retro.

I must agree that she does look strangly less beastly at night. clearly we need a few more night shots of her: I must go down to sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by...

Now that the new Klemtu Terminal is open why does B.C. Ferries need to be running the overlapping services on the North Coast?
Not running the overnight service as well as the Day cruise would save money on fuel seeing the Nor Ad is a fuel pig.
