Compilation of 2 videos of the MacGregor doors on the Queen of Chilliwack. - from a July 2011 Monday morning at Bella Coola during loading.
A closing door. Notice the loud alarm sound while the door is moving. If I had designed the system, the alarm would have been a recording of the keyboard solo from "Light my Fire". (for those who are interested in music from the doors.... )
Also, a clip of traffic moving up to the closed-door.

If you don't mine me asking, what is the point in those gates? The point is the sharp end, or the blunt end, depending on which direction it is facing. ------------- haha, the point of them is to control water flooding on the car deck. ie. flooding from heavy seas which might ingress through the car deck doors. Sloshing water on an open deck (such as a car deck) creates huge instability for a ship, causing it to list or capsize. There were two high-profile and tragic examples, in the 1980s and 1990s, both with modern ferries; where this exact scenario happened. - The Herald of Free Enterprise, off of Holland - the Estonia, on a trip in the Baltic Sea. This had hundreds of people die, on a modern ferry, in the 1990s. In essence, these doors divide the car deck into 3 separate compartments, thereby creating a multi-compartment car deck. - so there is better stability if the deck gets flooded in heavy seas or if the hull is holed. Of course, they are just half-height, so they are only designed to prevent problems with heavy seas ingress, and will only buy you time in the event of the hull being holed. These type of doors were on the Queen of the North, and they saved the ship some time, allowing for evacuation. They worked. All that being said, they are a band-aid solution to an old-ship problem. New ships have designed-built multi compartment features to delay or prevent instability in the event of water ingress. But the car-decks are still open spaces, and so there is still risk, but that risk is mitigated by the watertight car-deck doors. Any ship with a long open car deck (like all of our ferries) is a risk, for this water-sloshing stability problem.

Here's a look at the Discovery Coast Route, Route 40 that the Queen of Chilliwack serves on for the Summer Months. This was a documentary on the service and little bit on how it came to be and the communities it serves back in the day when Ferries were looked at as a link to isolated communities.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3 ( has some Engine Room footage)
Part 4

Is the chilliwack just a spare ship now for the time being seeing as how she isn't doing route 40 till summer? I thought she did other routes like Saltery Bay- Earls Cove. Just curious seeing her at Deas on Marine Traffic.

Just curious seeing her at Deas on Marine Traffic. View AttachmentAfter the Island Sky entered service, she has been doing only relief work in the off-season. Her normal relief duties are Route 17 and Route 7, although as of late Route 7 has been seeing more of the Bowen Queen. The Queen of Chilliwack's next scheduled relief stint will be in early 2014 on Route 7, during the reconstruction of Little River and Westview terminals.

In the 2 weeks that the 'Chilliwack has been on route-40 this year, I have yet to see her listed/shown on the BCFS website "Vessel Positions" page.
That is odd...

Queen of Chilliwack in Queen Charlotte Sound north of Port Hardy. Viewed from the HAL cruise ship MS Volendam - 9 July 2013. I just noticed WCk's current signature, so I came looking for this photo, and now I feel vindicated: Even the master photographer can't make the Queen of Chilliwack look good. Yeah, Scott should like that suggestion.

Did the 'Chilliwack run late this often when she was the regular winter boat? I'm having trouble understanding why she's doing so poorly now when she was a regular on this run up until 2009. Did the schedule get changed at some point?
