I post this here, because I think it confirms the rumours of the impending retirement of the Queen of Chilliwack: Here's the link to the DETAIL on the first round of service reductions:HEREIn this link, there is a page for each route, and the Bold-Outline sailings are the cancelled ones. - there is also text on each route-page that describes which specific sailings are cut. (This is too detailed to cut/paste into this thread) ----------- Here's a HUGE one: I expect that the 145-145-125 vessel replacement plan for the Queens of Burnaby and Nanaimo, combined with the cease of Route 40 service, will allow for the Queen of Chilliwack to be quietly retired. It doesn't sound like a Northern Discovery is in the cards at any point in the near future, as the mighty Nimpkish will continue full-time service. This also means the addition of a stop at Bella Bella on the summer schedule. Interesting summer service changes ahead for the north.

I can see there would little use for the old wack but less then two years after her last major refit/getting coastalized retiring her? What a waist of money, or could we see her as the 9a vessel this year?
I guess I should ask when her licenses expire before I would do any speculation.

Keep in mind that there are 2 quasi arms-length parties here: 1) BC Ferries which did the Chilliwack upgrade, 2 years ago 2) Province of BC - who killed the route today So blame it on the imperfect ferry structure that the BC Government created. - Where a ferry company has to plan and maintain a fleet to meet the contract demands - Where a Provincial Government can change it's mind, rendering those ferry company plans useless.

Okay that makes more sense. It shows that the way BCF operates is very flawed.

What other routes is she able to run on without having to alter the schedule?

What other routes is she able to run on without having to alter the schedule? My guess would be none. Does she take longer to load than other vessels, or does she just get behind schedule because she's slow as a slug?

Fifteen million to extend the ship's life by 5 years is indeed a waste. My understanding is that the province was unwilling to fund any new vessels at the same time that the 'Chilliwack's safety certs were about to expire. But I think we should get rid of the Golden Ears Bridge, and put her in place of that. I know one ex-member liked riding her on route 17!

I liked riding the Chilliwack on route 17. She is way better than the Island Sky on that route. So the schedule has to be revised big deal!

The Wack could be used as a new HQ for the company, BC Ferry Services. No one has yet mentioned how much money they fritter away on that fancy building in downtown Victoria that they have now. Find moorage somewhere for the Wack and move the pricey HQ staff on board. The car deck can be put to many good uses, I am sure.

That way, Chilliwack can finally be put to good use. Yay! Hornblower Yachts' San Francisco HQ is onboard the old WSF ferry Enetai (ex- Santa Rosa). It is the only surviving member of the Steel Electric-class. There is no reason why BCF can't do the same.

Sorry for kicking some dust on an old thread. Just logging on to check up on my favorite vessel. So I read the previous posts and so I'm guessing the port hardy to Bella coola "discovery coast" route is being cut correct? Then the nimpkish would then run the winter connector service year round instead so the passengers from bella coola aren't left hanging?

Then the nimpkish would then run the winter connector service year round instead so the passengers from bella coola aren't left hanging? If you read through some of the previous posts on here, you'll find the answer to your question. But yes, Route 40 is going to get canned. And the mighty Nimpkish will serve year-round on the former route 40. But really, I think they ought to use the slightly mightier Tenaka during the summer, so that my favorite BCF minor vessel will stay in service for a little while longer. I'd think that they'd need a bigger vessel in the summer anyway because of the influx of tourists in the summer. Personally I would be one of those tourists, since I'd love to visit Ocean Falls; I think it's neat that there's a waterfall that goes straight into the ocean! It is sure one of BC's many scenic treasures, you don't see something like that in many places.

The Queen of Chilliwack should be on route 7 till March 31st as the Burnaby will be back on route 17 April 1st then I would assume the Island Sky should be back to take over for the Chilliwack unless she goes for refit. But the next route 7 schedule starts April 1st and it's based on the 50 min crossing so I assume it will be the Island Sky!

Time for another Walkthrough. This week the Queen of Chilliwack gets the nod.
Just a Warning, this one is a bit shakier than normal at a few points in the video, the Shakiness is a bit below my standards but I find the walkthrough as a whole to be acceptable.

Anyone hear what may happen to the Chilliwack after April 30th? (when route 7 returns to it's normal non-Chilliwack schedule, unless it gets another extension)

I never liked the Chilliwack. Slow and ugly as sin, she looks like a miniature Alberni. Yuck!
