She's certainly a better looking ship then the northern adventure. but why did they anchor her in the berth? They used the anchor as a pivot so that they could easily back her into the berth. They obviously want to use the rear ramp to access her during her stay at Departure Bay.

Yes, the other reason is for safety, some time ago a brisk night wind had the Queen of Cowichan over at the Cement Plant dock.

I suspect one small tweak that is going to be made is some drain holes along the bottom of the I-beams that make up the framework for the rear ramp. I would think that water collecting like that would cause a rust problem in the long term.

Excellent photos everyone! She is a nice looking ship. I'm jealous of all of you who were able to get out and photograph Norex's arrival. If I could have taken yesterday off, I might of driven north to do some photo capturing of my own - ah, such is life. I really hope they do an open house for her somewhere in the lower mainland/Vancouver Island area - Canada Place would be nice, like they did for Norad and CR.

Amazing photos everyone, she is a lot bigger then I thought when compared to the Cowichan. I look forward to hopefully getting some on Spring Break. As it turns out, the NE is larger than her predecessor Queen of the North, but carries 100 fewer passengers.

Looking at the photos I am wondering what that marking on the hull under the "BC Ferries" is for. I haven't seen it on any other ship before.

Thanks for the info. I thought it might have been for the fins but I wasn't sure.

I guess, since I've been so enthusiastically tracking the NE all the way from Flensburg, that it is rather ironic that I will never, ever get the chance to sail on her. I know absolutely no one who lives in Prince Rupert or Bella Bella.

I know absolutely no one who lives in Prince Rupert or Bella Bella. Assuming that you are able to live a quasi-independent life, then don't let those factors limit you. I've been to both places, and I don't know anyone there either. I can add Bella Coola, Klemtu, etc to that list. Solo traveling can be quite peaceful and interesting.

I know absolutely no one who lives in Prince Rupert or Bella Bella. And that will stop you; WHY?!?!?!?!?!? ;D I don't know anyone in Port Hardy either in addition to the places you mention. I have been on the route a number of times both solo and with friends. The solo time my travel companion got sick, and insisted I still go on the trip. I was amalgamated into a group of German 20 and 30 something tourists and had a great time. Work hard, save your loonies, and go... You have about 30 years of service life (or longer) to make it. No reason not to. A friend of mine just got a second job and went back to waitering part time. His answer as to why - "I'm not letting some little economic nonsense mess with my travel plans!" He works for the city as a planner and has a very protected job. However, he has decided he is going to save first then go, rather than put his trips on credit card and pay after. And since his goal is a trip that puts the gas in his motivational tank to do the extra. Making me think - hmm starbucks here I come?

Amazing photos everyone, she is a lot bigger then I thought when compared to the Cowichan. I look forward to hopefully getting some on Spring Break. As it turns out, the NE is larger than her predecessor Queen of the North, but carries 100 fewer passengers. The crew certainly benefits from the arrangement in much superior accomodations than those down below on the 'tween deck of the QoftN. Putting them up above waterline with great views from their staterooms likely gives a morale boost compared with the dark cramped quarters they had before. It is likely much quieter than being down closer to the engine room as before. The more rocking and rolling up there in rough seas is a small price to pay. Not to mention the biggest improvement is in safety. That takes up a lot more prime space in the ferry so is one of the reasons the ferry is bigger. I don't know for sure but the cafeteria looks bigger at least on paper. The buffet seems about the same size but the QoftN had the bar area included in that space. The stand alone bar area on the NorEx is therefore an extra. The gift shop is much bigger. The passenger reception area on the QoftN was just in a wide hall area with a counter into the pursers office, while the NorEx has a dedicated area. The staterooms themselves look larger. On the QoftN they were like railway bedrooms with one lower and upper berth above, in the two person outside staterooms. The staterooms in the NorEx are bigger. The stairwells between decks are wider and more generous. On the QoftN they were much narrower and at a glance looked to be a bit steeper especially the higher in the ship you got.

Regarding FF-YVR's picture captions (thanks for those):
- Aurora-Lounge is the forward pay-lounge, on deck-5 - Raven Lounge is the TV lounge near the stern, on deck-4.
I still can't figure out which eatery has the buffet, and which is the more casual cafeteria place: - Canoe Cafe - Vista Restaurant. .........I'm guessing that the forward-located Vista Restaurant is the buffet, as it sounds more sophisticated....

Thanks for the corrections...even my friend was confused as it was his first day on board and he said he was quite overwhelmed. Plus, before I posted these, I had only seen them on the display on his digital camera.
