I expect it has already been covered, but I have only just joined this group! Does Northern Expedition normally dock bow or stern in at Bear Cove? When she departs in the mornings, where are the best photo vantage points. Same questions about Prince Rupert; normally bow or stern in? Many thanks, William Welcome here, William: Normally when all the bow-ramp equipment is in good working order, the NorEx will dock bow-in at Port Hardy, and stern-in at Prince Rupert. Regarding your photo vantage point question, are you asking about on-the-ship, or on-shore. We can help you with both....

Thanks for that information. I was wanting to find a good point shoreside at Port Hardy to get her as she backs out and turns away. Also, where is the best point to get both BC ferries from the shore at Prince Rupert? I know that's difficult from a visit once before but I managed to get 1/2 down the BC Ferries pier to get them. Many thanks.

Thanks for that information. I was wanting to find a good point shoreside at Port Hardy to get her as she backs out and turns away. The best spot for berthing pictures at Port Hardy is at a boat-ramp & pull-out approx 200 meters from the ferry terminal, on the road to the ferry terminal. There is a breakwater to walk out on a bit, and it gives a great & close view of the ship in the Bear Cove berth. It is literally the last thing on the water side of the road before you enter the Bear Cove terminal (just a couple hundred metres of trees between the photo spot and the terminal. Check it out on Google Earth, it's easy to find (a Queen of Prince Rupert photo is linked on Google Earth to that spot at the end of the breakwater). For an example of the view, see the below thread, reply #17, and the last 2 pictures in that reply (Scott's photos). ferriesbc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=4509

I'm going to be travelling NorEx this August, and I'm wondering if there's any chance the crew would let me have a tour of the bridge. If anyone works for BCF or has connections that may help with this, please speak up. thx.

Is there a certain person at the Chief Steward's office who seems to be generous when people ask my question?

If anyone works for BCF or has connections that may help with this, please speak up. thx. A bridge tour usually depends on the location the ship is in when you asked, the amount of marine traffic present and what crew is working. My suggestion would be to ask at the purser's office about an hour into the voyage. Is there a certain person at the Chief Steward's office who seems to be generous when people ask my question? All the Route 10 and 11 crews are great. Just ask politely and I am sure they will get you up there for a look at some point along the voyage.

I am wondering if anyone knows whether the Norex has an internet connection. I doubt it will but I'm hoping...

Thanks for the info Scott, they should really think about adding some because I bet people would even pay for it on the long trip.

Great! I'll be sure to ask for a tour! "Please mr. cheif steward, sir, but would you be so kind as to let me have a guided tour of the ship's bridge?" "No." "Please?" "Oh, what the heck." "yay."

Please post pictures! *Prost* I think if we searched we would see pictures somewhere of the Redwise Crew enjoying the stashed beers.

I (along with my wife) was in Prince Rupert this weekend. We did some camping, canoing and escaping the heat inland. We also did a little ferry watching. Here is a shot of the NorEx entering Rupert Harbour last night at about 10:15 PM. And here is a shot of her en route south out of the harbour taken at about 7:45 AM this morning. Both shots are taken from the beach near the Prince Rupert Grain Terminal on Ridley Island. Last night's pic was in very low light, and this morning it was a little foggy. The fog has been keeping Rupert cool - 15 to 20 oC while inland at Terrace & Kitimat temperatures have been 15 to 20 degrees higher. More photos tomorrow.

Here are a few more NorEx pics from this past weekend... From Sunday (Aug 2nd) evening at ~10:15 PM as she arrives at the entrance to Rupert Harbour off of Ridley Island... Grain terminal loading dock in foreground Southern end of Digby Island in background And from early Monday morning as she made her way south through the mist... Passing anchored bulk carrier south of Ridley Island These morning shots were all taken from the same WW II defence structure that I referred to in the Northern Adventure in service photos thread the other day. This structure is located along the CN tracks just north of Ridley Island at the entrance to Prince Rupert Harbour. Lastly, while hiking the Butze Rapids trail in Rupert later in the day, we encountered one of the BCFS unofficial mascots... Sorry, its mate is missing... The Butze Rapids Trail leads to an impressive reversing tidal rapid, located just north-east of town. All photos © JST

I was impressed with the ease with which the NorEx moves through the water. At harbour speed there is very little noticeable wake. The NorAd, by contrast, kicks up quite a bit of foam at bow and stern when moving at about the same speed. I did not think to take any video footage of the NorAd, so a still has to suffice. The NorEx is, however, a little noisier than what modern ships ought to be. You can hear her in this video as I heard her from shore, at perhaps 150 metres distance at the closest point of passing. What you hear primarily is a deep diesel rumble originating from those large MaK's deep in her belly.

How does the Nor Exs fuel consumption compare with other major vessels including the Nor Ads?

A short video of the Northern Expedition, featuring some short interviews with Capt. Bouchard & others. Thank you for this, Mr. Musical Moderator! It's fun to re-live my great experience I had back on August 12. Also, I'll treasure my fellowship with my ferry friends in Port Hardy and aboard the NE. Captain Bouchard wasn't on watch that trip, but this whole crew on duty this trip were very top-notch and did well nevertheless. I salute them for a job well done, and will remember this trip for a long time.
