Looks like there will be no replacement vessel for the New West... Oh, Scott Beat me by 2 Minutes, Sure is a Quick turnaround for a fire though...

When the renny was being delivered they cruised past sobc going around 23 knots before going into north van I've seen her do 24 knots before when she was behind schedule.

Yea, and I saw the Nimpkish run 25 knots on the Queen of Richmond trip a couple years ago. I honestly don't believe you there. I'm not sure her crews would even be permitted to do that, especially in these times. The fuel wasted on those extra few knots would be fairly substantial.

I've seen her do 24 knots before when she was behind schedule. Marinetraffic keeps a record of the fastest AIS-reported speeds of the ships it knows about. The fastest recorded speed for the CR is 21.5 knots The CI is recorded at 21.8 knots. CC's top reported speed is 21.2 knots. All of these speeds are consistent with the 21 knot + margin published top speed for the Coastal class. 24 knots is not entirely inconceivable during the delivery cruises due to the lack of weight but 24 knots in service isn't something I'll believe without an AIS screenshot.

A fire in machinery spaces on a vessel has to be considered as a fairly serious incident. Presumably Transport Canada must give its okay before the vessel is permitted to go back into service following such an incident? Does anyone know what the rules are?

A few more shots of the pre-fire QNW arriving at Duke Point, on October 19, 2012. Ferry times have changed since 1976, in the Mid-Island area. A single-ended ship arriving at port is now a big deal (to us, at least ;D)

Queen of New Westminster missed half a day's work on Friday May 18, 2012 with a rudder problem.
Here she is, testing it out, between 1:30 and 3:30pm, on May 18th, before she returned to service. - off of berths 2 & 3 at Tsawwassen.

If a ship has an incident or accident whic results in damage or injury to passengers, crew, cargoe or vessel. In addition to the company and his boss The Master must inform. Transportation Saftey Board (Can be done via VTS and by filling out report) Transport Canada (can be done via VTS) Classification Society if delegated eg Lloyds, Die Norske Veretas, ABS all used by BC Ferries Insurance. Usualy done by bosses. P&I Usualy done by bosses
The Major Vessels are mostly delagated, If damage has occured Class Surveyor will usualy come and inspect prior to giving aproval to sail.
Depending upon severity RCMP Goast Guard may show up.
A fire will result in madatory reporting. If fire supresion system deployed must be recharged. Temporary Repair May or may not be aproved by Class. Class may show up prior to aproval (On call 24 hr in major port) TC will leave to class except in serios incident. Crew evacuated due to smoke will cause inestigation TSB will probabaly defer to BCFS internal.
Prior to sailing Class must aprove ok. All rest can be done later.

The Queen of New Westminster had "mechanical difficulties" when all the forward gears were disabled.
She had to leave Duke Point in-reverse, and go full-astern for the trip to Tsawwassen.

One of my favourite quirks about the BC Ferries: The Queen of New Westminster's upper vehicle deck: - Port side is 4 standard lanes - Starboard side is 3 wider lanes (with the help of the pylons).

I love it when a ferry is nearly empty like this. Makes the trip so much more relaxing, and no line ups at the cafeteria.

That is why I love route 30 it's never busy like the joke I call route 1! The New West should stay on route 30. I have taken the 10pm route 1 sailings before which have been pretty empty. But not too often it is like that on route 1.
