Queen of New Westminster arriving at Horseshoe Bay, 9 April 1971 © WCK-JST - Fujichrome 71-01-12] by Jim Thorne, on FlickrThis is the New West as she was originally built. She was then serving on the run for which she was built, Route 2. The red lettering on the side was a centennial logo for 1871/1971, the 100th anniversary of BC becoming a province within Canada.

:)in looking at brother whitecoast/wettcoast's original Q. of New West. pic., the original livery looked great, but suffered the indignity of the first centennial logo of those years. To my mind ships always looked better without these add on graphics. Looking at EG.s post of the San Mateao's steam whistle, brings to mind the days of many fine blasts from the past, and I just heard the sick toot of the new Coastal, in the Tsawwassen air! ::)mrdot.

Great night shots, especially the last one (let alone the second-to-last funnel shot) with great lines. Well done, sir. I've always wished that more folks would attempt night shots of our fleet, if only for posterity.

:)further on this extensive Q. of New West. spread, I am impressed with the nite shots too, partly as they mask the new age re-brand of the fleet, but I am going to have to do a passage on this said vessel, as in all the years of my ferry encounters, this is one of the only originals that I have not taken passage, over all these many years! Thanks goes out to brother whitecoast for helping to change up my sig. and it is one of the old time beautiful shipshape vessels, that while not a lady, will do fine to grace int. woman's day! :)mrdot.

Thank you kindly for the comments! It's well appreciated. I plan on doing more photo-tours of the ferries. I have fond memories of the old New West. First time, I have been on board her since pre-costalization.

:)today was quite an event filled day as a large number of Thornes all voyaged over to Victoria for our mom's 90th bday party, having done many of our ferries over the years, I finally caught the New Westminster, on the return home tonite. It was one of the few I hav'ent either worked or taken passage on, over the years. The bookstore across the road from the party had a number of copies of the old Bannerman book and many other sought after pacific northwest marine titles, and the prices were very reasonable. I have used my shiny gold card for five return passages since coming of age! :)mrdot.

Here are my newest photos of the Queen of New Westminster, from July 2, 2011. I took 1 sailing on the QNW on that day, but then passed her 2 other times from other ships. Here's a taste of what I saw: ------------------- 7:30am as she shuffles empty from her overnight Berth-2 to Berth-4 in preparation for her first sailing of the day. I'm on the 8:00am sailing. Here's a view of the crew area at the stern on deck-6 As I disembark at Swartz, here's a view of her in berth-1. Later when I"m on SOVI, I see her crossing the strait on another trip towards Swartz. And finally, when I'm leaving Tsawwassen on the Alberni in the afternoon, here she is coming back into Tsawwassen.

This picture of New West at the southern entrance to Active Pass is lovely. I mean this as a compliment: one could almost make a jigsaw puzzle out if it. 47 years ago today, New Westminster had her Inaugural Run (Aug. 4/64), probably on Route 2. Happy Birthday! When a ferry is "commissioned", is this the same as its I.R.?

(Note to moderators: this is my first "link". I hope I got it right.) Well, you posted this an hour ago, and you haven't edited your post yet, so I'm assuming that whatever you were trying to do, that you did indeed get it right. - otherwise, you'd have noticed it right away and changed it or tried something else. (unless you've done a " post and run" and didn't check....but who'd do that, especially after mentioning that you wanted to be sure it worked.... ) By the way, which photo were you referring to? If that's what you meant by "link", you can use the "Quote" button to do that. Tell us what you were trying to do, and we'll be happy and patient to walk you through the process. - but the key thing is to always check your post, after you've posted. I usually find mistakes in my own photo posts, and I fix those right away.

Guilty as charged: I did commit a "post and run". Most of my Internet access is at the Victoria Public Library - or the Flying Club - so I do what I can when these places are open. Reply #102 is the one I was talking about.

A jigsaw out of that picture is a lovely idea but it would be killer with all the blue, but then you don't really want an easy puzzle or it wouldn't be a puzzle would it. I had never thought making a shot like that into one but its a nice idea.
