That's a rather nice colour scheme the Victoria Line was using at the time. Three ships tried, but none succeeded in reviving the 'Maggie's" service on the Victoria - Seattle run.

It would be nice if BC Ferries did to their ships like WSF do by applying a gold ribbon on their funnels to denote 50 years of service. Seconded.

Here's my video of Queen of Burnaby on December 24, 2014: - Arriving at Comox (seen from shore) - Sailing to Powell River (onboard video) =============== One thing's for sure: when the 'Burnaby is finally retired, I'll have a good library of legacy videos in my YouTube account. Next coming November I'll be riding the Burnaby in the Gulf Islands. It will be the first and likely last time on her.

She's old and tired looking, but still a classic design. If you've been on the Coho before, you'll recognize the design of the staircases from car deck to passenger deck. And it's neat to know that the Alaska ferry blue-canoes have that same Spaulding staircase. Have fun. I look forward to reading about your experience.

I'll be riding her as well. You're going to have a great Spaulding-appreciation time. During the 1960s, 13 ships were built (for 3 different fleets) that were roughly based on the same original design with various modifications. 7 of those ships remain, with Taku, 'Nanaimo and 'Burnaby soon to be retired. So that classic ferry ride opportunity is shrinking. Good on you for being able to enjoy 2 of them in the same vacation trip. As a ferry-fan, you'll appreciate if for the rest of your life.

The Nanaimo is heading to Esquimalt for refit tomorrow night and the Burnaby will start servicing the Southern Gulf Islands.

The last time I saw these chairs was during the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. We started our family vacation that summer by hopping on the short lived Victoria to Seattle ferry run. I never forgot the heavy wrought iron clamshells. Never would I imagine that I'd be working on the boat that made that run 21 years ago when I was nine years old. There are a few of these relics kicking around in the crew area and when I'd heard that they were still there I knew that I had to find one.

Here's the Queen of Burnaby leaving Tsawwassen on October 30th, as seen from the departing Queen of New Westminster. She presumably still has another year to go in this condition. The "refit" in spring 2014 (basically she was tied up at Deas for a few months as surplus) clearly was nothing more than bare minimum maintenance. Perhaps she'll go to drydock one more time to address that Port propeller hub issue. But yes, one more time is probable for that chronic problem.

In fact, inside she is in extremely good condition, and even outside on the decks, she looks quite good. Don't let a few rust streaks dampen your opinion of her.
Her horn sounded pretty good, too. Someone needs to get a recording of it.

Some photos from the Burnaby yesterday. I was really disappointed to see her upper outside decks closed. However, I hiked down to a nice vantage point in Long Harbour. The poor old dowager is looking 100% like an old dowager should, at least she still cuts a nice swath through the sea.

It certainly hasn't been easy for the Queen of Burnaby the last few years. Now for the 2nd January in a row, the Burnaby will be removed from service once again due to that problematic propeller hub. In the meantime, the Island Sky will run the Route 17a Triangle between Little River, Blubber Bay, and Westview while the North Island Princess does Route 7. (also for the 2nd January in a row) Water Taxi service will also run between Westview and Texada as it has done in the past. The modified Schedules are in the link below and are similar to the ones last year. News Release: www.bcferries.com/bcferries/faces/attachments?id=936947

While the old girl is having her chronic prop hub problem fixed, for what BCF no doubt hopes is the Last time, would it be too fanciful to ponder if they could pass the hat around BCF's Head Office and wherever else panhandling is legal in Victoria in hopes of coming up with enough scratch to order up one last round of lip-stick and mascara for the old dowager? Given the 'Burnaby' has had a long and distinguished service as a BCF fleet vessel, as well as that inglorious stint as the 'Princess Marguerite' III. Let's at least try to have the old girl looking as best as possible when the first of the 'sausage boats' come over the horizon to replace her.

Could not they move the Queen of Nanaimo to Comox and then run extra route 1 ships for through fares to the Gulf Islands?? Maybe keep one Spirit on standby seeing both are scheduled to be out of service starting Wednesday. That way Island Sky could stay at Saltery Bay and they wouldent need to move the NIP to Saltery Bay. That will not be fun for people using that route.
