The QOB pic above was actually taken in 1985, just prior to the repainting with the Expo scheme. So the Oak Bay would have been 4 or 5 years old.

I just scanned a few images from my collection of photos and postcards.
The only one taken by myself, the Queen of Oak Bay in the early 1990's. She still had the "visors" that lifted up on the upper car deck:

I found another little album! Back on Friday July 29, 1988 I decided to devote an entire day to riding on all 5 C-Class ships. That season, the ship assignments were as follows: #1 DB-Queen of Surrey #2 DB-Queen of Alberni #1 HSB-Queen of Oak Bay (some things never change ;D) #2 HSB-Queen of Coquitlam #1 Langdale-Queen of Cowichan ========= First a couple pics taken the previous day...I had trekked to Giovando Lookout on Newcastle Island to take a couple shots...one of the Oak Bay Queen of Oak Bay arriving at HSB for her 11:00AM sailing to DB. No overhead walkways at HSB at that time and foot passengers were usually both loaded and unloaded via the upper car deck: On board the 11:00 sailing:

Saturday evening (Jan.16, 2010), there was clear sky, I had a tripod and some newly found shutter-speed awareness, and I found myself at Departure Bay beach as the Oakie arrived and then departed. A good time to try out some new camera ideas under great conditions: ================== (shutter-speed for this was 0"6. I like the blurred background of the Newcastle Island trees) (I like the night shots of being able to see inside the car-deck windows) (I'm very happy with this shot. I like the rock and edge of Newcastle Island, and I really like the night-effect of the wake.) (Going out past Brandon Island.) The North Shore mountain ski-hill lights appear in the background. The background shows the lights of 2 ski-hills in the North Shore mountains. Cypress is on the left, Grouse is on the right.

When the C-Class vessels were built (all of them, not just the Oaky), which vessels did they replace? I will keep this brief, because this is a photo thread (if you want to turn this into back-and-forth, please do this in a discussion thread. But short Q&A is ok here.) - this is less simple, because of other short-term assignments, staggered introductions, and trickle-down effects. But if you look at which ships were serving Routes 2 & 3 BEFORE the C-Class, and look at them again in the 1990's, you'll clearly see that the following ships are who was replaced: Queens of Burnaby, New Westminster, Nanaimo, Sidney. Also Sunshine Coast Queen and Langdale Queen.

Here is a picture of the Oak Bay with Nanaimo in the background. Unfortunately the weather didn't want to co-operate and this is about the only half decent shot from today.

The Queen of Oak Bay is out of the dry-dock, now moored beside it, which gave me some awesome photo ops today. She seems really shiny! From Esplanade: From the new pier: See what I mean by shiny? a side-shot: One of her bridges, with her new SAM radar: nameplates: Why is there still a bit of rust showing through?? I thought they would get that scrubbed off... This is how workers board her. The ramp is attached to the barge on the left, then stairs connect to the wharf. During refit, they also installed a crane on top of the ship's funnel to assist with the loading of cargo on it's route, since BCF is expanding their cargo-carrying capabilities. The freight will be stored on the roof of the ship during sailings.

Your joking, Are you pulling my leg. Thats got to put the ship over weight.
But if this is true, it's another big change in the fleet next to the strectching and lifting of the Ex. V's.

Your joking, Are you pulling my leg. Thats got to put the ship over weight. But if this is true, it's another big change in the fleet next to the strectching and lifting of the Ex. V's. I read something about this in the BCF quarterly reports. The extra top weight is stabilized by a sponson-stabilizer. They were going to try the Oak Bay first, because of her longer passenger deck, which gives them more cargo space. Especially for the winter months when it's too cold & rainy for people to use the sun-decks, this space can be used to hold shipping containers.

Your joking, Are you pulling my leg. Thats got to put the ship over weight. BCF has thought of that. They're lowering the ships' vehicle capacity. The gallery decks are going to be modified into lounges during her next refit. Until then though, the gallery decks won't get used.
