Putting on the brakes! Queen of Coquitlam arrives @ Departure Bay Terminal with the 5 PM 3 PM sailing from the mainland on 19 December 2015. This was taken during my recent Christmas season visit to BC's south coast. My wife & I were aboard the Coquitlam for 7 PM 5 PM sailing back to the mainland. This vessel was subbing for the Queen of Oak Bay during its extended 2015-16 refit. © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Just FYI this would probably be the 3pm from HSB arriving in Departure Bay. The Rennie would of been the 7pm departure to HSB as the Coquitlam is filling in the Oak Bay which would of been the 7pm from HSB!

We made it from the Bear Cove Terminal to Departure Bay Terminal in about four hours. We had planned on getting the 7 PM ferry but actually caught the 5 PM which was running about 25 minutes late. Can an aging ferry geek like me blame a mistake such as this on early signs of dementia?

Anyone have any inside info on what's going on with the Queen of Coquitlam this morning? She canceled her first round trip left an hour late on her second and took an hour to make her first trip.
Also is there any Langdale crew trained on the Cowichan or another boat if the Coquitlam has to come out of service for emergency repairs?

I was on the Cowichan a few years ago when it was running on route 3 and it was in a similar situation when the Surrey was out for its annual refit, and the usual replacement vessel (the Coquitlam) broke down. So the Cow was brought in from Nanaimo. I assume that Langdale crews remain fully 'fammed' & certified to run the Cowichan if they have to.

Queen of Coquitlam is nearing Horseshoe Bay Terminal with the 1645 sailing from Langdale - 28 June 2016. The Surrey did the earlier route 3 sailings on this day. I gather they replaced her with the Coquitlam for the afternoon sailings. Is this a common practice? © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Yes, on Tuesday and Wednesday. They do the ship swap to offer a 5:50pm (at the expense of the later 6:35pm) to Langdale commuters. Therefore, the PM ship departs before the AM ship arrives in Langdale at 14:55. There aren't any extra sailings on these days, so having one ship only would mean the commuter sailing would be at 6:35pm - this was the case from '04 or '05 to '09 and in June/July 2010. BTW: the route 3 schedule itself online explains most of this post.
Tuesday AM shift - Surrey Tuesday PM shift - Coquitlam
Wed AM - Coquitlam Wed PM - Surrey
Having the Coquitlam back to back on the two days avoids the need for tedious dock-swaps at the end of the service day in Langdale. The berth 2 double decking will be welcomed in the next few years...

I didn't realize the Coquitlam took the following morning sailings; it wasn't like that when the vessel swap started years ago (the Surrey ran every morning). Do you know when the current practice was adopted?

Do you know when the current practice was adopted? Actually Dane, not to be difficult or anything, but it has been the practise since the schedule was modified for summer 2010 (a FAC suggestion). Edit: I can't find ferryfanyvr's post explaining this, so it's your word against mine lol This didn't start until late July 2010, because the Surrey broke down in the spring of course. Hence the Cowichan, Oak Bay and Renaissance helping out on route 3.

Hmmm I may have mistaken the very early practice for normal (I was living across from Langdale at the time). It just stood out to me at the time because of the extensive movement of the two boats that sometimes had to happen - other times they'd use the single level ramp if the first Langdale departure was light.

Ahh yes, as I understand this is still done on the Saturday 7:50am leaving Langdale (previously 7:55am which conflicted with route 2 leaving at 8:30am). Berth 2 was also used for the 8:35pm arrival from HSB on Sundays - a sailing now closed to the public (which was the practise when the Esquimalt was in service).

I rode past Departure Bay on the bus about a hour ago and the Coquitlam is tied up in berth 3. Cowichan of course in service. I would assume when the SBC is done with trials the Coquitlam will head for some time out as per her normal refit.

Yesterday at 16:30 I checked siitech and the Coquitlam had just exited Dease dock with the assistance of tugs. She was at sandheads at about 17:30-38ish and proceeded to Horseshoe Bay before finally arriving at Departure Bay around 21:30. She is to take over from the Coastal Renaissance until the Cowichan returns from refitt. According to RBI the Cowichan and Coquitlam Will be based out of Departure Bay this Xmass while the Alberni is sitting this Holiday season out. New West will be on rt 30 and the Renaissance #2 out of TSwn on rt 1.

Queen of Coquitlam Hoseshoe Bay to Langdale Winter 2017 service.
What is the Scheduling Logistics in regards to BC Ferries Providing a Crew(S) to run the Queen of Coquitlam while she is on this unique Horseshoe Bay to Langdale Sched? Normally in the Summer Both the Surrey and Coquitlam Crew's are based out of Langdale and year round there is only the Queen of Oak Bay and Capilano based out of Horseshoe Bay. Who is crewing the Queen of Coquitlam? Are they Horseshoe Bay, Langdale and Nanaimo based personal who are already trained on the vessel? There has not been a Second major vessel based at Horseshoe Bay in years, so I am wondering how this is logistically.

What happened to the gates on the front in 1977

What happened to the gates on the front in 1977 I assume that you mean the 'arches' that were located at both ends of the upper car deck? They were there when the Coquitlam (& its sister, the Cowichan) were new in 1976. Those arches lasted only about one year. I have heard that they were not mechanically reliable (i.e. troublesome). They looked nice, however. Helped to give these first big double-enders a certain grace ...

Notice they are not using the foot passenger walkway.
Also I asked a crew member on the Oak Bay about crewing the extra ship based at Horseshoe Bay. He said that BCF is employing a mix of Departure Bay, Horseshoe Bay, and Langdale crew with some new hires to operate the sailings. Basically anyone who is trained and certified to work on the ship.
Remember that the Coquitlam does operate regularly from Departure Bay, Horseshoe Horseshoe Bay and Langdale crew.
I would assume the Island Sky is been crewed by personal already acquainted with her. Probably Saltery Bay and some Comox based crew.
