I went for a ride today to check out the post-refit Coquitlam. Inside...no changes, but the floors and carpets are nice and clean. Outside there is a lot of fresh paint and the decks look much better, at least from what I could tell through the deluge of rain at the time. One thing I noticed is that the foot passenger gates on the #2 end pickle forks have been refurbished as shown here.

Some dusk views of Q'Coquitlam, at Departure Bay. - 12/22/2012. I love this type of lighting for ship photography, and the effect of the lit windows in the ship.

Coky and Oakie, seen at Departure Bay. - December 24, 2012. Coquitlam is out-of-service on that day, sitting in berth-3. But she's smoking a bit. Oak Bay is in berth-2, loading or unloading. I'm on Sugarloaf Mountain, having a fun time.

Queen of Coquitlam leaving Departure Bay on her 1:50pm Boxing Day sailing. My favourite photo backdrop; the north end of Newcastle Island. With a freighter out in the strait.

Why is BC ferries making the Queen of Coquitlam sail the morning sailing from Departure Bay and the Queen of Cowichan sailing the afternoon sailing from Departure Bay? It shows that on the schedule page on their website.

It shows that on the schedule page on their website. The Coquitlam is currently at Deas. I have no idea why the Travel Center says that.

Up until yesterday the Coquitlam was sailing in place of the Cowichan. The only reason I could assume is that the Coquitlam needs to run for a few days since she spends, what seems to be at least, half of her days tied to the dock. The only time she's ever needed these days is to replace the Surrey, Oak Bay, or Cowichan. I remember seeing a Service notice yesterday saying that the Queen of Coquitlam had to cancel the first run due to Mechanical Difficulties. Now it's pretty obvious it's a little more serious, and that the round trip was canceled to get the Cowichan online perhaps? Who knows.

My friend who works on board tells me they had the Coquitlam for a few days because the Cowichan needed some kind of maintenance work. Since he's currently on days off, I have no idea what happened to the Coquitlam in the morning.

According to SiiTech, the Coquitlam is now at Deas. I wonder what the liklihood is that she'll be relieving the Oak Bay starting tomorrow morning as scheduled.

Short video clip of the Queen of Coquitlam leaving Departure Bay, with a cameo from the Queen of Alberni which is headed for Duke Point. - shot from the far end of Departure Bay beach. - 5:00pm on January 20, 2013. - sped-up 1.5 times (just a bit)
I was very happy with the timing of the Alberni appearing just as the Coquitlam was departing.

A semi-clear January evening is nice for ship photography. Late this afternoon, I was prowling about in my car, looking for good vantage points for photography. I wanted to shoot some long video of the setting-sun effect on the mainland's coast mountains, say from Neck Point or Pipers Lagoon parks. But as I drove down Hammond Bay Road, my glimpses to the strait showed me that the mainland mountains were all cloud obscured; a foggy low-cloud day. So instead I headed for Stephenson Point area, to one of Scott's favourite spots. I climbed down (and up) two different sets of stairs towards the shore, but I was unhappy with both locations, given that I'd be returning up the path/stairs in dusk light and because those locations would only afford short-view opportunity. So I decided to head to the far end of Departure Bay beach, and shoot some classic video of the incoming & outgoing Route-2 ship, entering/leaving Departure Bay, and in the berth across the bay. ....so that's what I did. Pretty soon I saw the Queen of Coquitlam coming into view near the 5-Fingers. - So I started shooting video. I also shot some stills, of her in the berth and of her departure from Departure. Nice sunset effect with the light. Purple colouring as she departs, passing in front of Newcastle Island. Heading out of the bay ==================== Here's a video clip of her Nemetz Lights flashing and her departure at 5:00pm. - video sped-up 1.5 times (entire video sequence to be posted soon)

Pardon the Coquitlam overload, but here is my wrap-up video of my evening shipwatching, from January 20, 2013. - the whole group of scenes of her arrival, traffic unloading/loading and departure of this ship.
Video sped-up 5x.
I hope that you enjoy watching these types of videos, especially those of you who can't get near the ships as much as you'd like to. I sure had fun filming and then editing this.

I know we have a million photos of the Coquitlam, but it's pretty rare that I get to ride a C-Class anymore. So I took a bit of a trip down memory lane today, remember what the Coquitlam was like before they gutted her and put the Coastal interior design in. The Coquitlam was in refit not too long ago, so she looked pretty good overall. I was surprised to see how much smoke she pushes out of the funnel these days. I don't remember it ever being this bad? Queen of Coquitlam by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr I'm not sure what the deal is with paint these days. I think there seems to be two different types being used. So the patchup work becomes really obvious. The Coquitlam is the only one left over with the mint green bridge brows. Solarium used to be this colour up until recently. Now the Solarium is bright white. On the other C-Class sisters, the bridge window brow is black. Today I was remembering the old escalators. I remember them being orange on the sides, and quite narrow to ride down. I would have loved to have gotten my hands on one of those old and retro "Keep moving" lights that would flash at the tops and bottoms of the escalators. In particular, I remember these little windows between the two escalators to see if anyone was coming in the opposite direction. A feature I think you only see with the Cowichan and Coquitlam. Finally, a couple of panoramas Queen of Coquitlam by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr Panoramic view by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr

Yeah, I miss the escalators. They were part of what made the old C's unique.

Not too long ago, I took my first ever trip on the BC Ferries. It was awesome! The Queen of Coquitlam was the first BC Ferry I rode. Here are a few of my photos. It did give an opportunity to get this photo of the Queen of Coqiuitlam and Surrey. Queen of Surrey & Queen of Coquitlam, BC Ferries by Elwha On The Rocks, on Flickr On board, the Queen of Coquitlam! Interesting about the mint green bridge brows. One of my favorite memories of the B and V Class was that it was painted mint green under the bridge wings. Good to see it is surviving!
