Just so you know, you captured a rare sight at Horseshoe Bay that day....the Queen of Surrey in berth 1. Since being moved to route 3 in 1996, the Surrey has only used berth 1 in exceptional circumstances such as this one..the Queen of Coquitlam delayed in berth 2 for mechanical issues, and the maintenance-related closure of berth 3.

Does the berth 1 overhead walkway reach the gates on the Oak Bay/Surrey?

I don't think so, because when I was on the Queen of Surrey about a month ago, we docked at Berth 1 and they had us disembark via the upper car deck.

Does the berth 1 overhead walkway reach the gates on the Oak Bay/Surrey? The berth 1 overhead reaches the gates on the SUNDECK of the Oak Bay/Cowichan/Coquitlam at lower tides only. As for the Surrey...she has the gates cut in the sundeck railing for the HSB berth 1 overhead, but doesn't have the little doorway cut in the side of the solarium opposite the gate. This opening isn't essential, but also lacking in this area are the flashing (Nemetz) lights and the intercom/phone to communicate with the bridge. Because these last 2 items are important safety features, perhaps the overhead would not be able to be used at any time.

Queen of Coquitlam, at Departure Bay's berth-3. Not being used this day (3/30/2013). I like the early morning sun, for its reflective qualities. Regular view and the flip-side

The Coquitlam is currently traveling on a Route 2 westbound (18:30) sailing via the northern end of Bowen Island. Any thoughts why?

My friend, Phil, just told me that the Chief Officer announced that they were taking the "scenic route". He does not know why. I have reminded him of his responsibilities of being a ferry employee who is best friends with a ferry fan. He must always get as much info as possible.

It took 10 minutes longer than usual, so I'm surprised they did that. Fuel savings is very important these days. There must be another reason that we don't know.

Queen of Coquitlam seen at 10:04pm on Sunday June 2, 2013, on her way to Departure Bay. - the south end of Texada Island is in the background. I'm on the Queen of Alberni, headed for Duke Point. It was a lovely evening to be on the water.

FerryNutSeattle, enjoy this video !
====================
Filming this segment of my trip included one of those "darn it" hindsight moments. I ended this segment, in spite of still having some good views of the 'Coquitlam. - I wanted to move to the other side of the ship, because we were passing one of the Seaspan pusher-tug with barge, one of the ships that Seaspan took over from Van Isle Barge. So I left the Coquitlam. When I finished my pusher-tug video shoot (which was too dark and didn't work out well), I went back to see the Coquitlam and I realized that I missed the Oak Bay, which passed right by Coquitlam. Darn it, I could have got the Oakie passing Coquitlam in that same orange dusk light.
.....there's always an opportunity missed. However, I'm thankful for what I experience, instead of dwelling on what could have been. (but Oakie passing Coquitlam would have been sweet, haha)

I certainly do not mean to detract from my friend's early-morning tribute to the C-Class, but here is a shot of the Coquitlam just off of Horseshoe Bay... MV Queen of Coquitlam by MileagePhoto, on Flickr

Maybe it's just my imagination, however I found this a little amusing. A friend of mine was showing me a movie trailer, and halfway through the trailer I heard a familiar sound. The Queen of Coquitlam's whistle. Those of you who are already familiar with the sound might find this amusing as well in the way that the whistle sound was used in this horror movie. I've quite often found a lot of the C-Class whistles sound quite spooky sometimes. So I found it ironic to actually notice a recording of one being used in a horror movie.
First, I show you a video which is truly a recording of the Coquitlam's whistle.
Now, here's a link to the movie trailer. Fast forward to about 1:03 and you should hear it in a couple of seconds from that point.
