Yes I think you're right on construction date. But running into was Spirit of BC, an employment programme, that ran to and included the ferry itself amongst many other public projects.
Thinking back real quick, I don't actually think the Spirits were launched with the Spirit logo?! Ironic haha.

Off Topic - the Spirit of BC was a job programme in the mid to late 1980s, likely named after the provincial logo of the time (also the Spirit of BC) - the timing of the ferry name isn't coincidental at all. I don't think they started constructing it till about 1990. But you are right about the name. The BC Government had the 'Spirit' at that time. BCF did, in fact, intentionally adopt a gender neutral policy for naming new ships starting with the Spirits.

It is all about political correctness. If it wasn't, BCF would still be calling their ships "Queens". The Spirits were so named because BCF felt that using gender-specific female terminology to name the ships was sexist, or at the very least would be interpreted as such. Utter rubbish, but anyway... It's only utter rubbish in your own opinion, and likely also only political correctness in your own opinion, looking through your own personal lens. One person's lens is not another person's lens. Situations are different, and people have different places of privilege from each other. I do think in this case, that it does remain a matter of political correctness. I do appreciate the continuation (or at least mostly so) of the gender-neutral naming schemes do seem to be providing that more general gender-type names.

While waiting for the Island Discovery's arrival, it gave me the opportunity to watch the Island Malaspina Sky arrive and depart Saltery Bay. All Photos are © CS16 Photography and may only be used with Permission from the Owner.
With the power span above her.
In a profile view.
In the sunlight. Look closely and you'll see the Island Discovery in the background.
Closing in on Saltery Bay.
In the berth ready to depart.
Finally, she powers out of Saltery Bay as the Discovery approaches.
That's all for now.

I actually build lots of Lego ferries and surprisingly enough the Malaspina Sky is on of the more difficult ships to build.

I have been thinking about Malaspina Sky moving to Swartz Bay to Southern Gulf Island. I feel like she will be better fit for her because she can easily carry 600 passenger per sailing which will match her carrying capacity of her running mate and passengers gift shop / Coastal Cafe Express which match amenities of her running mate.

The other possibilitie is less likely but is also a seemingly prudent idea is that possibly bringing the Malaspina Sky to Swartz Bay and the Cumberland to Saltery Bay because the idea is that up there the Cumberland is going between two ports rather than multiple different islands and the Platform decks will likely be less of a issue because of that and in turn the Malaspina Sky will most likely be of simaler capacity and will not be of issue because of the Gallery Decks, that being said though the main issue with this possible idea is that the Malaspina Sky is a one off ship and I am not sure if she can fit all of the ports on route 5/5A without any dock modifications and it would require crew familiarization because of the Different control systems engines and safety/evacuation equipment, however BCFS has been considering having the Malaspina Sky at Swartz bay for quite a few years now.

There's no plan for the Malaspina Sky to be moved, as far as I know. The Mayne Queen will be replaced by the fourth Salish vessel.

Visited the Sunshine Coast on the weekend. This was my first encounter with her. Somehow, I don't think that the commander would have allowed me to take a random. Not sure how much larger she is than the Capilano? With the new, poorly planned campground slated for the west side of the island, things are going to get worse.

Over the past I was up in Powell River was able to take Malaspina Sky with the new pet area outside with a dog, I like what BC Ferries did allow dogs to go anywhere outside which is nice, the only thing is BC Ferries does not make clear on how to get to it. I am posting these photos because she is still looking fresh from her refit. Malaspina Sky by Blue Bus Fan, on Flickr Malaspina Sky by Blue Bus Fan, on Flickr

Has BC Ferries set a new record for elevator incompetence with the ongoing issue on the Malaspina Sky? I think we're at about the two month mark where passengers with less than 100% mobility are stuck on the car deck. This is a fairly major vessel on an essential 45 minute crossing, and a vulnerable portion of the passengers can't access lounge seating, or food services.
Ridiculous.
