By my understanding, the only reason the I-sky is not currently certified for the strait is because BCF never applied for it. There isn't really any reason she can't be certified for it.. she has the high bulwarks and necessary watertight subdivisions. In many ways I would argue that she's as safe or safer than the Burnaby or Nanaimo. As it stands now, I don't really see the issue with the I-sky serving as a relief on route 17. Crossing time should be about the same, as the Burnaby seldom exceeds 14 knots, and she doesn't have to turn around. The lack of galley service is a disappointment, but as a relief vessel it's not a big deal. And a note about the Alberni: Bear in mind that TC regulations have changed immensely since the 70s and 80s. Just because something was allowed back then doesn't mean it is considered safe now. Since the Canada Shipping Act was amended in the late 90s/early 2000s, TC has become more stringent in following IMO (read: European) standards, particularly in the area of passenger ships. In addition, BCFS could add 'weather gates' to the Island Sky if it is deemed necessary. The so called weather gates are found today on the K and Q barges. I agree with you about the weather gates. They should put hydraulic lifts on the Island sky.

It should be possible. All that really matters is that a fare is being collected, regardless if it was was from a toll booth or onboard.

Is it just me, or does this photo story make it look like the Island Sky loaded from Berth 1 before leaving? You better have gotten some pictures of that, and make sure to enter one in the header contest.

I managed to take a few photos of the Island Sky today while she's sitting high and dry at Vancouver drydock. Currently, they're readying her for the Georgia Strait crossings by enclosing the car deck. ;D The mist you see just off the bow is not water mist. It's sand while they sand blast the hull. Island Sky by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr Actually, I'm only kidding. The car deck is being temporarily enclosed with shrink wrap/tarps to protect the deck from the weather. The entire deck coating is being stripped to allow for a new coating to be applied. Island Sky by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr Now a photo taken from the sketchy/wobbly bridge that runs across from one side of the floating drydock to the other. You can see that crews are working at setting up the tarps for this end also. Island Sky by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr Also, a head on view of the hull. The hull has already been sandblasted for the most part, and is being prepared for a fresh coat of paint. Apparently the Island Sky is a pain in the butt to drydock, since it requires 17 foot tall blocks to be setup in behind each RAD for it to stay upright. High and Dry by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr

Despite BCFerries rhetoric, this doesn't seem like a very efficient hull-form.

Island Sky on the Comox-Westview route, Sunday November 3, 2013. On her noon sailing to Comox. - I'm on the beach at Little River. Sky with the Powell River mill smoke-stack. Into the berth at Little River. - do you notice the new gantry overhead at the berth? This is a few yards forward of the old one that's still in place. This likely means that the rebuilt berth will be a bit further out in deeper water. Her interlude at Comox between 1:30pm and 3:00pm Departure path from Westview. - 5:20pm. At Comox, loaded and ready to leave for her 7:15pm sailing.

Is it just me or does her passenger deck seem smaller than the Cumberland and Capilano?? It looks like it might be! And did anyone see vending machines on the Island Sky??

Island Sky is the only ship in the fleet with a basketball court on the car deck. The hoop and netting will soon be attached to the overhead arch at the end of the deck. The lines for the key are already painted, although the key is really really long. - Passengers and crew are subject to "3 second" violations for standing in the key. Here: Team Orange discusses inbounding strategy (the rest of the players are on the bench, out of my frame)
