Marine Traffic shows the tow getting closer to Catalina Island. Perhaps a sighting off Twin Harbors in about one, a couple, or so hours from the time of this posting (give or take). Here is the next cam to watch and a GoogleEarth map of the western part of the island: www.visitcatalinaisland.com/twoHarbors/webcam.phpYou'll have to manually refresh the image.

Update on Queen of Vancouver: As of 0700 20 August 2012, the Alan G with Queen of Vancouver in tow was offshore from Rosarito, BC, about 10 hours out from Ensenada at 6.3 knots Thanks Paul. You made me think about the "Rosario, BC" location, but I figured it out. ;D

A big "Thank You" to you sir, for sharing your enthusiasm, knowledge and screen-shots with this forum. Much appreciated ! My pleasure. It was "bittersweet enthusiasm" to say the least as we all know that we won't see this ship anymore as a whole. Perhaps in form of "new" metal objects we may use in everyday living as well as buildings et al. One more floating "hearse" awaits our watching. Then, let's change our focus of attention and have fun watching our beautiful new "Olympic (Mountains)" - Class Washington State ferries take shape and begin their service here in my part of the Salish Sea.

Good work, guys. Excellent coverage. I especially enjoyed the pictures from Avalon on Catalina Island. The missus and I spent a couple of days there three years ago and loved every minute of it. A very beautiful, peaceful place. Yes, it hurts to see another one of our beloved veteran "Queens" going off to the cutter, but at least we still have the Nanny, Burnaby, and New West for now. That'll be the kicker, when we start watching these last three heading south. The wife and I will be taking the New West and Burnaby this weekend, which will have special relevance after saying goodbye to the Van.

Um, that's the Queen of Saanich. How can u tell? 1. No windows on the Deck 3 platforms. 2. Three ventilators on the roof of the upper-aft lounge.

I've finally been able to find some content with the Queen of Vancouver being scrapped in Mexico. I wasn't expecting to find it on youtube, and I actually came across it accidently with a simple "BC Ferries" search.
I'll warn you though, it's pretty graphic to see, since you can see parts of it being dismantled. They don't exactly use the safest ways of doing things either which can be pretty shocking. But it looks like this video was filmed with a Cell phone, so it's somewhat poor quality but it gets the point across at least.
The dismantling of the Mid Ship Lounge Lounge
Flipping over a section of the promenade deck. You can sort of see the outlines of a couple of the upper car deck windows
Removal of the Forward Elevator Shaft
The workers messing around with a cutting torch on the upper car deck
Removing part of the decking from the Main Car Deck. You can also see quite a bit of the hull with the deck removed in this clip also
A section of one of the hull compartments being removed

No evidence whatsoever of work methods being used to minimize the generation of asbestos containing dust, and more importantly, use of protective equipment by the workers. It looks as if Mexican safety standards are not much different than at beach in Alang, India. It is troubling that we as Canadians will allow our cast-offs to be dismantled in such a way.

Wow...thanks for finding and posting those, Chris. Even though I assumed she was gone by now, there's nothing like video or photographic evidence to drive that fact home

We have a federal government that until recently actively promoted the export of tons of asbestos products to whoever in the (third) world wanted to buy them. Why would we worry about a few fibres wafting around a Mexican demolition site? Thanks for finding those clips, Chris. Despite the possible safety deficiencies, I'm actually glad to see the ship being cut up and probably recycled into useful new steel.

Not only is the Asbestos a huge issue, but even the quality of safety precautions is pretty stunning as well. The first clip I posted just shows how the workers all sit in the lounge while the section of bulkhead and deck is removed fairly casually. I don't think this was on any of the Ferries down there, but it looks like this was some sort of freighter where the cameraman is down in the bottom of one of the holds and he happens to look up just as a chunk of steel comes flying down and narrowly misses him. Fast forward to 2:20

Sorry to double post... But I've found another youtube user who has more footage of the Vancouver. You can pick and choose what you'd like to watch. Alot of the areas being distmantled are easily recognizable and most are from early in the scrapping stages www.youtube.com/user/serda79/videos?flow=grid&view=0

I hate making assumptions, but I'm fairly certain this could be of what's left of the Queen of Vancouver. There's a small chance it could be the Esquimalt, but I'd be pretty surprised. I've been watching this youtube poster quite closely for new additions to see if I can find any clues.
