My contact guy (friend of a friend of a friend) said that he'd heard that Saanich and Sidney and Haida Chieftan are all going to be towed to China for scrapping.
So I'm just passing this along as rumour. I have no clearer details on this.

When you read through the link in my post, it states, that a Mexican company is the "purchaser" so, one would assume that she's on her way to Ensenada. Mexico is a way easier tow than over to China plus, the Sidney also has a gaping hole in her side that would need to be plated-up for a voyage like that.

:)you know it probably would be a more wonderful outcome if the Sydney was towed to China, as a merciful sinking at sea might be more likely possibility! as was the case for suzie Q! :'(mrdot.

I'll head out to the Sidney and try to get some more photos in the coming weeks. To clarify, the guy that I talked with today referred to it as "that ferry on the Fraser". I interpreted that to mean the Sidney. - maybe it means an Albion ferry? But I'm not putting too much reliance on this whole conversation. It's interesting for speculation and it might shed light on any soon-coming ship movements, but otherwise it's just more speculation.

I'm kind of a masochist, I guess, because I am always interested in see updated photos of the two, particularly the San Mateo, even though it breaks my heart to see it like that. Morbid curiosity I guess.

Morbid curiosity I guess. I'm sure there are many on this forum who consider it pretty much off-with-his-head level heresy to suggest that any photography could be a touch redundant, so I made my comment not without a slight bit of hesitation. I don't know what curiosity could be sated with yet another death-pictorial of the 'Sidney. Pretty much all you could say would be, yup... still rotten, rusty, and sinking into the muck... I'd rather look at the many shots that have been posted of her in her sailing days.

:)yes, niel and eg fleet are both on an even keel on this matter, the Sidney, Saanich, and San Mateao all should be remembered as they were in their heyday, and our old shots, some of which I managed to get, when I still had mobility, are a good way to remenence, so let's remember the good stuff! :)mrdot.

Video (not mine) of the Saanich at anchor off Anvil Island along side a hulk of unknown origin:
Anyone know anything about the hulk? The people who shot the video are concerned that somebody might be doing some illegal ship scrapping (take with barge of salt as required) but I'm more curious why somebody has tied up the remains of an offshore support vessel next to an old ferry.

Interesting to see. Thanks for the link.
I was staying in Squamish for most of last week. I tried on a number of occasions to see if I could even see the Saanich tucked in behind Anvil Island from any vantage point along the Sea to Sky Highway. No such luck, but good to have some actual confirmation that she's actually there, and will be interesting to find out how long she stays there.

Very creepy video indeed. She looks spooky, without the name or any corporate branding. I think it's time something happen to that ship, she's been sitting around far too long, now.

I wonder if that other hulk in the video just might be the HMCS Provider. It is/was a Canadian naval supply ship based on the west coast. Anyone know?

According to Wiki, HMCS Provider was towed to Turkey in 2002 and scrapped in 2003.
The layout of the hulk tied up next to Saanich, with a flat mid section to stern and a raised platform over the bow, is common for offshore support ships used in oil field work.

The Queen of Saanich in happier pastel blue times... Swartz Bay bound off of Galiano Island in Active Pass - 15 January 1985. This was at the time of the livery change from pastel blue to the 'Expo' scheme. Some of the Saanich's sisters had already been repainted. The Saanich was to have its turn sometime before the summer of 1985. Also notable are the extra car deck openings at the platform car deck level (deck 3). These were probably added during the Saanich's previous refit. photo © JST - 85-06-06 - Nikon-VueScan by Wett Coast, on Flickr And another view taken seconds later... photo © JST - 85-06-07 - Nikon-VueScan by Wett Coast, on Flickr

Through much of the year the Saanich was operating as the third vessel on route 1 and would sit at berth 2 Swartz Bay most of the time. The tarps would be put in place to keep the upper car deck dryer & warmer, and perhaps inhibit rusting. I'm guessing these were not used during the busy summer months when the Saanich was seeing a full day of service, every day.
