While such a manner is properly dealth with here in Canada. Unfortuatly in France its not. For example the French aircraft carrier- Clemenceau appeared to be to much of an inconvience to the French and it seems that they tried to send the vessel to another country. Unfortunatly for France their attempts to get another European country to take the problem off thier hands has failed. Seeming now that they have a 22,000 tone steel vessel on thier hands and no way of taking the harmful asbestos out of the ship without paying a very large dollar I might add, the plan is to now make the ship a underwater "artifical reef", this again alerts a red flag for Greenpeace because with this asbestos in our waters and more and more decommissioned ships being made into artifical reefs, we as well will have more to worry about than whats being dumped into the Fraser Valley.

So anyone know what is happening with the Queen of Sidney when the date she is gonna be sunk??? Is it still going to be January?? oops, not sunk I mean scrapped! I would like to try and get over to Vancouver on the day to see that happen, not a pretty site though. What is up with Mac and his great idea of this Sidney farewell he was talking about? I think he was full of it!, lol!

Well, some countries are significantly less humane than others. Canada is a world leader in that field with our strict environmental ordinances. So the asbestos on the Sidney is of little worry, as it very likely will be removed before the scrapping. What they do with it, though, I am unsure.

The strict regulations though might cause as well, that works like removing asbestos might be very expensive - there will be people who will have to use special equipment and protection as well and such. Not in India where nobody cares for a human life or the environment where it´s done cheapely and lot of profit taken from the metal, this is why many of our European vessels get sold to India for scrapping, although there are legal cases already about this as it is forbidden to export dangerous waste - so the Danes had to scrap some of their old railway-ferries in their own country and according to environmental laws rather than export them to India for scrapping.

I have thought about such matter before, but if you look at what goes in some of the rivers in the lower Fraser Valley, you might think again. The asbestos, however, is removed before scrapping, AND, it is usually used as an insulator inside the vessel. Used as an insulator? I thought it was fireproof stuff!

Ok...we are just going to put "fireproof STUFF" all over the ship. But why? Insulation...it is fireproof insulation Harry.

Ok Doug, so it is an insulator, and a fireproof substance.

I saw the Queen of Sidney on the Skytrain about a month ago--it was cut in half and it looked fairly weird--and now it's gone (sniff). I live about 20 minutes away from where it was parked.

This total BS information has led me into thinking about Biff...and led me into thinking you ARE Biff. We were ON the Sidney just over a month ago, in Mission. They are still negotiating about selling her for scrap, so why would you say such a stupid thing? They don't even cut vessels in half for scrap anyways...they take them apart piece by piece.
I have been dumbfounded by this....

Doug: I don't get that "biff vibe" about this new poster. I get a "newbie vibe", but it doesn't smell like Biff.

Biff "duped" us into believing three things, and he was planning for more. THAT is the Biff vibe.

"i heard biff was going in for a little sex change surgery in the next month or so. he has been taking hormone treatment for a while now and has started to develop a set of breasts. good luck with your major changes biff" - You might say, I'm going in for my OWN mid-life upgrade then!

Oh, your OWN mid-life upgrade.... I am looking forward to hear the news and I hope, the guys and girls from the shipyard eeh.. or wherever that is done a good job. Have replaced all the asbestos, fixed the loose screws & checked that the copper-pins are in the right place as well Otherwise I suppose - it means scrapyard pretty soon

Hey Mainlander.....when you finish banging your head against the wall, move over to the "non ferries" page of this forum, and post on the "new members" thread.
Please introduce yourself to us there. We'd like to find out who you are, what you do, etc.

A fellow from Portland who has been trying to save the S.S. Shasta, sister to the San Mateo related this information to me from the person who owns the Queen of Sidney and seems to have been stuck with the San Mateo from her old owner. This is the information he sent to me via email this morning. Thought you'd be interested... "The Queen (of Sidney) is intact, operational, and a meeting is being held Monday (May 1st) to decide her fate: sale or scrap? He (the owner) wants to save her and estimates that she would sell for about $50,000. What amazes him is the amount of new machinery on her, including Cat driven generators less than a year old!- Scutttlebutt is B.C. ferries scrapped a few older ferries to justify putting money into high-speed ferries and so the sale was abrupt and to the lowest bidder... The Queen's engines are complete except one cylinder head has been removed and is on the dock. He has been told that B.C. Ferries invested $20,000 in rewiring her just before she is sold off; definitely sounds like a sudden decision was made to sell her off!! Looks like a bargain deal for whomever gets her."Anyways, thought the Queen of Sidney fans out there might want to have an update.

Oh, and a further update...
If there is a group or groups interested in saving the Queen, now is the time to sign in. I suggest they phone Tapp Brothers and alert him, preferable this weekend or Monday morning. The phone number is 604-856-8049. He considers her to be in good shape and should never have been sold.Bottom line: if you believe there are people who want the Queen, but need time to organize, let's tell him so he can delay the process up there. He is for saving her.
