Question? How well anchored to the shore is the Sidney? This spring the Fraser may experience flooding, perhaps serious flooding like in 1894. Might the Sidney get swept away if such flooding does happen?
The mountain snow packs this year are well above normal and it has barely even budged yet. With the right (wrong?) weather conditions producing a rapid melt there will be flooding.

I think she's using the San Mateo as an anchor (and the SM is flooded and sitting on the bottom of the river), so if the Sidney gets loose, it's because she (a) dragged "anchor"--probably out into mid-river--and (b) then parted the lines. Might make for an interesting day.

BC Ferries *fake* News Release17 May 2007 - 1004 PDT BC Ferries today confirmed that it's former vessel, MV Queen of Sidney, broke loose during flooding of the Fraser River and floated uncontrolled into shipping channels before grounding on Salt Spring Island in the Straight of Juan de Fuca. BC Ferry Services Inc denies any rumour that the Queen of Sidney was actively being used by BCFS as a suplementary vessel on the chronically overcrowded and often sailing delayed Route 1 servicing Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay. "There is absolutely no truth to this vicious rumour, which was apparently started by the regulars on the message board 'ferriesbc.proboards20.com'. We absolutely deny this rumour, and disavow any connection with the reported sinking of the Queen of Richmond." Officials were unable to comment on the fact that 3 service trucks belonging to Deas Pacific Marine, nor 46 other vehicles were onboard the ferry at the time of it's grounding.d

The Sidney and San Mateo are still alive and not so well as of yesterday... They may just get swept down river in a few weeks.

Conversions of commercial vessels into yachts is quite popular these days. A former Russian salvage tug/spy ship was converted into a yacht called Giant I. Canadian Coast Guard Ship Narwal was converted into yacht Bart Roberts. And a giant ice-classed tug was converted into the yacht Lone Ranger. So where am I going with this? A certain billionaire Vancouver native ;D could turn the Sidney into a floating palace and business entertainment vessel . Divide the car deck into sections to obtain the necessary water tight compartments and viola. A piece of history saved. At 335 feet it would be longer than Aristotle Onassis' Christina - herself a former Canadian HMCS frigate. And would come in at number 16 of the World's largest yachts according to Boat International US. Talk about bragging rights. Smaller than a bunch of Saudi and other middle east yachts and smaller than Larry Ellison and Paul Allen's yachts but pretty good. Can you imagine the accoustics for organ and trumpet concerts on a section of the car deck. How about it Jimmy? Oops.

Make the organ big enough to play the greatest organ work of all time: FANTASIA AND FUGUE ON AD NOS AD SALUTAREM UNDAM - Franz Liszt I sweat everytime I hear the last page on that one! Wipes me out!! Best recorded by John Scott in Saint Paul's Cathedral, London. Saw him play this in Seattle's Benaroya Hall and again by another organist this last Fall. www.seattlesymphony.org/benaroya/view/www.seattlesymphony.org/benaroya/press/watjen.aspx

MV Queen of Sidney has been approved as the latest practice facility for the NHL's Vancouver Canucks. Following their summertime layoff and part-time golf careers, the group's management decided to purchase the MV Queen of Sidney. As a result of a previous "unscheduled departure" which involved the Sidney's floating and subsequent grounding on Salt Spring Island, the old BC Ferry was already partially flooded.
A member of the Vancouver Canucks training staff happened to be on Salt Spring Island during the salvage of the craft and their 5-year-old son happened to innocently mention "Daddy, that car deck is almost as big as a hockey rink. Wouldn't it be neat to skate on there if that were frozen?".
Taking this suggestion to heart, the near impossible task of turning the former BC Ferry into a floating practice arena was completed, thanks in large part to the participation of the members of the message forum board "ferriesbc.proboards20.com"
All future Vancouver Canucks games will include a ticket FSC (which, although similar, is NOT "fuel sur-charge" but rather FERRY sur-charge.

I've just been looking at the Q-Sidney, on the Fraser River, on GoogleEarth, and I'm thinking its very likely that she could/will break-free and float-away downstream, in the coming swollen-river.
For some reason I always thought she was on a "cul-de-sac" spur of the Fraser....but No, she's on the open channel. In fact, she in the middle of an "S-Curve" on the river.
If she broke free, she could do damage to the Golden Ears bridge or Port Mann bridge. (yeah, it all depends on how well she's secured).
I wonder about liability & insurance for the Sidney's owner.
Does anyone know how frequently GoogleEarth's patches are updated? I'm guessing that it's every 3 months, or so.
I suppose there will be lots of items that break-free in the coming deluge, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for news of Sidney sailing again....
(maybe she'll end up on the east shore of Galiano Island?) ;D

I was down at Canada Place yesterday and I could see across the bay the Queen of Sidney sitting there! I am sure it was the Sidney as it wouldent be the Tsawwassen as she would be in service. Darn it, I should of got a photo, but it was too far away! I wonder what she is doing there! You know when you are down at Canada Place and look right across, is that the drydock??

Well then what is?? Looks like the Queen of Sidney! I am sure it is! Thought it was a Pacificat, but it's kinda small for that! It cant be the Queen of Tsawwassen as she is on the Saltery Bay run!

Well, I might be going to North Van in the next couple of days, probably wednesday. So I will try and get over to the drydocks to see whats over there. I know one of the Fastcats is in another dock not too far from the Drydocks. But it's hard to say what you saw Karl. Was it passed in front of the building with the blue and red stripe? (the building that the fastcats were built in) or was it just a bit further down? Or see if you can point out what you saw in this picture: www.pbase.com/kstapleton/image/43636267

I cant see it cause it is blocked by the cruise ship! Ok then it was obviously not in the drydock then where the fast cats are cause it was closer to the left toward the lions gate bridge! Darn it, I wonder what it was!
