Is it true the Queen of Sidney will be scrapped soon? It seems like such a waste. I know its rotting away but its a classic. Can anybody help me out and tell me what the plans are with this ferry?
Thanks.

Thanks. Currently There is no official word saying that the Queen of Sidney Will Be scrapped. It's been said before that it will, but it hasn't happened yet.

There is a color picture of the Launching of the Sidney, at the Old VMD shipyards. This picture is hanging in the Ogden Point Cafe, across from the Ladies washroom.

That's a great shot of the 'Sidney, Jim. I have many memories of coming into Tsawwassen and docking beside her but, I didn't have control of the camera back then.

That photo of the MV QUEEN OF SIDNEY at TSA must have been taken on a December day. Notice the Christmas tree high on her foremast.

Hi there, I found this forum just this afternoon. Very pleased to see there are so many others interested in our BC Ferries.
I have many memories from several of the BC Ferry ships - mainly from the southern routes - particularly the Queen of Sidney. I first rode her as a baby in 1973 to our family's cabin and have many fond memories aboard with my grandfather.
Does anyone have information on her wherabouts (the most recent information I have is that she's on the Fraser River somewhere and is scheduled to be scrapped at some point)? I'd be very interested in finding her an getting aboard like some members did in 2006.
Thanks in advance for any replies. I look forward to sharing discussion on these neat ships!

Hello rhmark, and Welcome aboard.
The Queen of Sidney is sadly rotting away in the Fraser River, just South of Mission, at Silverdale. A part owner of the Ferry is a member of this board, and he got us aboard in October 2005. She was supposed to get scrapped last year, but that never happened.
We have been promised another tour aboard her sometime in the coming months, so keep your eyes glued to this forum.

Thanks very much. I ha dheard that she was sold to a logging company. I'd be very interested in joining you on the tour and meeting her new owner. Hello rhmark, and Welcome aboard. I came across her unawares awhile ago. I found it odd to see a rusted BC Ferry sitting that far down the Fraser. I'd love to look around the ship, just for the hell of it.

With the big 50 of Bc Ferries approaching. With the Sidney still in the river and the Tsawwassen still active. Are there any plans for a celebration of 50 years of BC Ferries. For the good, bad and the ugly of the service, it is a system that for its faults should be celebrated. If we want to publish a document, research needs to be started now. Not sure of how the head office is planning a celebration. With the Winter Expo at Whistler the following year, significant events in BC history may be side stepped. Anyway we have time now if we are prepared to help with a celebration. It has been a good run!.

What's the Winter Expo? Are you referring to the Olympics? And if so, wouldn't that be before the "50th Birthday"? I suppose there are different dates you could count from... I guess I'd naturally go for June 1960 when the service began.

It must be a combination of looking at too many negatives and translating that to the dollars that will be spent on the Olympics and trying to put it out of the way for another year. Of course the 50 will be right after the games in February. A tad bit less excitement, but nevertheless a milestone that should not be unrecognized. I hope that BCF is planning something.

I've been bouncing around the idea of a book about the original ferries. I went to Sono Nis website, and they had a section that was for submitting manuscripts, but I haven't got one yet. Maybe I should just tell them I Robet Turner. O.k., all you ferry-geeks... I'm going to use you as my primary researchers then. Go out and find all the old files, photos, stories, articles and even old crew members so we can interview them, and I'll put the manuscript together.

I have never been on the Sidney so it doesn't hold any of my memories, but I can imagine what some of you who do have memories on the Sidney think of this...I think this ones a stinker.

It's not like it'll be chopped down tomorrow, these types of things take time to coordinate.
