Cascade told me not to leap out about this, he is trying to save the ship. Unfortunatly the town of sidney did not want the ship.

I thought this wasn't going to happen for a while. Now I'm dreading the New Year....

Its located on the Lougheed Highway, about 5 minutes West of Mission, and about 15 Minutes East of Maple Ridge. when you pass silvermere (the 3 gas stations) you'll hit a straightaway, and you'll see her tied up to a bank if you look towards the river, shes tied up next to the Alber J. Savoig, and the San Mateo

That sucks.
Ive been on the Sidney hundreds of times, she used to sail on the Comox-Powell River run.
She was a great rough weather ship.

How far from the Albion ferry is she??? I might take a trip over to Van at the end of the month if I have time I might go out that way as I plan to do the Albion ferries too. Any good areas to get photos of her??? I think it would of been great if we could of saved her. It's sad, the first ship of the fleet. And they will probably do the same with the Tsawwassen. Maybe when the Tsawwassen retires the town of Tsawwassen will want to do something with her although Tsawwwassen the town is inland so I dont know what they could do with it. Have sort of a maratime floating musuem or something and permently dock her at Tsawwassen terminal or near there!

about 15 minutes depending on construction at ruskin. turn right chester and follow to the dike and park there, then walk along dike to her
just remember she is private property and to access her you have to cross private property. farmers have guns and know how to shoot them

it is too late now to save the ship i think i want to save it from the cutting knife and make it floating museum or get her running again i dunno yet i bet i have better luck buying her sister ship if that is possible

You Know, Even giving the ship over to the NDA would be a better way to go. (Nanaimo Dive Assosiation).
They could just sink her and use her as a artificial reef.

Price of metal these days is really high... salvagers were collecting abandoned cars off the Gulf Islands last summer (cars that had been sitting there for years) because it was worth it for the metal they could get off them.

I found out from another web-source, that the former MV Q.O.Sidney will be scrapped. The owners who purchased it left it too long dock-side and was looking pretty bad.
It would have been nice if it was converted into an accomodations or some kind of community building.

Interesting, but to make a point, it´s most likely the ship´s going to be scrapped, first the good prices for scrap metal at the moment, second the fact that a ship that does not make money for it´s company anymore does not have a right to stay anyways. Though, sounds good that they can use it for spare parts for it´s fleetmates. There was mentioned they used parts for the Coho too - are they built in a similar way ?

The only major changes are an extension of the passenger areas on the BCF ships added a few years after they were commissioned (high demand for cafeteria) and the modified bow for faster loading. |

Interesting, well as we all know there are similar cases "around" when it´s talk about historical ships to be saved, always a bit of a delicate task moneywise, not just one attempt failed due to the owners running out of money and lack of backup by the general public and companies.
Tourism might be BC´s third business, but I think tourism is as well the most sensitive part. Freight goes all year round, commuters go all year round - but tourism depends alot on seasons, the weather, and the economical situation of a region. I don´t know of course but I can just imagine that this is one of the reason and that everyone has just different ideas to spend the money in an even more profitable way.
As well, if it was for a ship unique in style and design it was something else, but apart from the history, it looks just like a small and ordinary ferry - not sure people do like such as an attraction.
I can imagine, just everyone is looking forward to the new vessel to come, much more.

Cascade, I think it depends of course, what kind of ferry and what it REALLY means to the community. We here have the Cap San Diego and the Stettin in Hamburg www.capsandiego.de and it IS a common tourist spot. I think, it has a history with Hamburg and the people living there did support it and regard it as such one as well. Now, I can of course not answer the question whether the Queen of Sidney has the same meaning for the Canadians of the region - question to be answered by the Canadian members of this forum, I suppose Another example is the www.rygerfjord.com in Stockholm, a restaurant, youth-hostel and hotel. I am sure there are more examples, mostly coming from regions which do have a very close relation to maritime matters. Who do own the Queen of Sdiney anyways now ? What are the actual plans with the ship ? |
