Wait! This could be our chance! If we want to help save the Queen it's now or never this might not be the end for her

I have to agree with you pr ferries 16 we have 1 more chance to buy her if no one buys her now she is done for good.
And then we got the question what do we do with her after we buy her?

How much would it cost to buy her? And does anybody own property on the river?!

Yes, indeed. Now:
1) Who on planet earth is going to buy a 40 year-old vessel for no apparent reason, except to save it from being scrapped;
2) Who on this forum can likely afford it;
3) Where would we put it, and what would we do with it?
Ask yourselves those very questions, and when you come up with an answer, post.

Come on guys, we've been through this discussion before. It is impossible for us to do all of that, as much as we would like to. He (the owner) wants to save her and estimates that she would sell for about $50,000. So there's already $50,000 gone, plus the price to moor it somewhere. Then there's the cost for upkeep, and any necessary maintenance to keep it safe, and somewhat operational (keeping the lights on). Plus it needs to be drydocked, to get cleaned up, in case any of you haven't noticed, there is a thick coat of green scum nearly covering up her exterior expo scheme. It also needs major deck replacement, as it was crumbling and cracking at my feet, making me feel a little uneasy about walking around on the outer deck - fear of falling through. Bill said the Port side engine could still operate with a bit of work, and were going to get it to work with the aid of some BCF personel, but never ended up doing so, as the propellar on that side is barried in the sand. This is not, "My dad will come and bring his tool box, and work on the Sidney for the day, and she'll be as good as new" kinds of jobs. This is the kind of work that would make most companies go bankrupt. If this person evergreet fleet mentioned is actually interested in saving this ferry, then I suppose he would probably be this whole forums hero. Dreams are fun. Reality is not.

The capital, the infrastructure, the 'skeleton', so-to-speak, is there; we have an invaluable peiece of history on our hands here, intact and priceless.
Let's save her.

Cheapest thing, other than scrapping,z would be to sell what you could and then blow a hole in her hull off of Chemainus or Nanaimo.

She has quite a bit of history on her a small bit to say so she's almost a historical landmark to BC. so if we can get a huge number of people on this and even the historical society we can do it. If they can save the Kalakala (the Siddy almost had as much history as her) then we can probably work together to save the Sidney. But If All Else Fails... FER THE LOVE OF BC FERRIES SAVE THE TSAWWASSEN!!!!!!!!

Wow, this is very interesting news!!! Bill (fivetwo), what's your view on all of this? Is this actually happening? As some of you know, I am directly involved with the Sidney, I do know whats going on so what Evergreenfleet stated is purely 1 (or more) persons opinion, and has nothing to do with the reality of the situation. All this info is either completely false or stretched info. We have been actively removing the valuable items from the ship. It is no longer worth saving for "historic value". Do any of you want to take a guess on how many different groups want to buy her/save her ? I and Art continue to field calls from people who " have this great idea" . As you may very well know, we are in this for the money, so just send us a pile of money and she's yours! . We (Art and I) continue to pull her apart from the inside out, and she will be scrapped when we are done. There is still a lot of copper, brass , equipment etc... ,that we are selling and will for some time. Maybe we will get a crew and scrap her right where she sits, dunno yet, this is all undetermined at this time. As for Evergreenfleet's friend who wants to save her, he was asked to "send the money "(haven't heard from him again . As for the phone number mentioned to call? This fellow also wants to purchase her , he has nothing to do with the Sidney, he owns the foreshore, he can't help you either. "Ya want a job done right?........ do it yourself" Any other questions? let me know .

I have a few questions, if you wouldn't mind...
Do you and Art plan to sell any of these items sometime in the near future? Or you guys just planning on keeping them for yourselves? How did the airsoft battles start up? Was there some group that phoned you guys, and wondered if they could borrow the Ferry once and a while as a place to shoot rounds of little balls at each other? Also, when you mean, "to pull her apart from the inside out", are you trying to just make her one big steel shell, with no windows, carpets, etc...so it could make the job faster and easier for the scrappers to cut her up? (I understand you're taking the valueables off) Also... What's the plan for the San Mateo? Is there anything left to salvage off of her? I'm assuming she'll be going around the same time the Sidney is going, correct?

Chris, Everything is for sale, It's just that we want to get the "big ticket" items out first. remember.. she is very big for a couple of guys to get through everything, so it is taking some time. That's why some of the stuff has to wait awhile. We aren't able to drive on with our vehicles right now, so that hinders us tremendously right now. Airsoft....one of the many ideas I talked about on the last post ,through a friend of a friend. They showed us the money . We want to get the manageable items out first as they are instantly salable. Once the goodies are out, she can be scrapped at commodity (steel) value . San Mateo- junk, sorry, She has had a real tough go of it over the years. She has been completely vandalized .Believe it or not, before we brought the Sidney to that spot, the only thing there was the San Mateo, thats it. so a lot of thieves and vandals had their way with her. When we brought the Sidney upstream , we brought power down from the road (I think Art paid about $10,000) and this access to power created the "junk city" you now see on shore and floating around the Sidney " (All of the junk was brought in by the property owner, not us). Our only interest over there is the Sidney. Not sure of the fate of the San Mateo, but I believe the steel doesn't even have any value as scrap. Not sure though. We have nothing to do with her.

Sorry if I inadvertantly spread any misinformation. Please bear in mind that the fellow who relayed this to me is fairly elderly and doesn't seem to have a real grasp at the details invovled with any of the vessels involved...including the Shasta. While a very nice guy, when he tried to tell me the San Mateo was still worth restoring I had my first doubts. I'm not exactly sure who he talked to about the Queen of Sidney but even I knew parts had been coming of her for a while...I do believe someone here or elsewhere mentioned that Black Ball may have been picking up parts for the Coho...in any event, it was not my intent to build any false hopes or distort anything...again, while a very nice, well intentioned guy...it seems though that he doesn't have a very clear picture of the situation. Again, my apologies.

Evergreenfleet, No need to apologize, I wasn't indicating that your info was incorrect, I was saying your source's info was incorrect , He talked to Art by the way. As for the Coho, I sold them some of the steering gear, but this was a year or so ago, They invited us down to check the Coho out, so we rode her both ways and let me tell you, she is really looked after. Great group of people there. They are very proud of her and I don't blame them.

Shame that they wouldn't buy the Sidney from you, they are cousins aren't they? They are cousins, but it is quite apparent when walking around, that the Coho was built in the US and the Sidney was built in Canada. The equipment used on each ship was generally from different suppliers, configured differently, so direct replacement was not possible in most cases. The steering gear did match up and was worth a fair amount of money, so had value to Blackball. As far as a tour, my contact at the time was Ken Stone, and I believe he has since retired. To further complicate a tour would be, US and Canada customs, and possibly the heightened security on a ship. We toured the entire ship with no problem, but there were only 3 of us.

Did you get off the ship or just stay on??? We were going to just stay on and do a round tour, but we partied a little too much the night before. so we felt a little queezy when we got to Port Angeles, so we got off and caught her on the next trip.

I'm a journalist over in Victoria who's interested in the fate of the Queen of Sidney. Fivetwo, I tried emailing you privately but the posted address didn't work. Could you drop me a line? I think a lot of people in Victoria would be very interested in getting an update on the ship and following its progress -- and the news might help with its sale to a local municipality as an artificial reef or historic artifact. rosscrockford@telus.net
