... and in regard to fuel, the Pacificat consumption of 6250 litres an hour at 37 knots compares with the (2006) figures of 6491 litres per round trip on the 'Oak Bay, and 8416 per round trip on the 'Renaissance, both presumably on route 2. We need the figures for the 'cats operating at lower speeds. Difference is the 'Cats burning 6250L is for a 60 minute period, which would only allow a one way crossing at best. So you must at least double that number to get a round trip figure that can be compared to a conventional ship.

Does anybody have access to or know the fuel burn numbers for the Pacificats at service speed? I'm looking for the stats for the Explorer in particular. I'd like to compare them to other fast ferry services, for my own curiosity. I have heard many ballpark figures by hearsay, but nothing ever concrete. There is a copy of the operational audit of the vessels conducted for the government, and a copy of the performance criteria released for the vessel's sale at both the downtown Vancouver Public Library and SFU's Bennett Library at the Burnaby Mountain campus. Obviously I am not in Vancouver, so cannot get it for you. If no one can by May, I will scan it for you when I am back home. I remember posting this a few years ago, but didn't have the patience for digging out the post. Here are some photos of the Pacificat Voygager interior from when she was tied up at Vancouver Shipyards. These were taken in 2008. www.flickr.com/photos/erjung/sets/72157603797860000/with/2220870077/I never really thought that they'd not bother with any BC Ferries branding inside whatsoever. However, I do remember the Voyager never had the BC Ferries logo painted on her side. Not even a Dogwood on the funnel. Just strictly the ships name and the cat diagram. I can still point out the "Waverunner Cafe" logo in one of the photos from above, which was as far as I know, a unique amenity aboard the Pacificats. A photo of the Voyager, likely on builders Sea Trials (note the lack of any logos): www.pbase.com/kstapleton/image/44380612

Just bumping this thread, to say that I moved 2 pacificat photo-posts from yesterday into this thread. - in case you didn't see them, they are here (see previous 2 posts in this thread).

Found a postcard that I forgot I had. I'm pretty sure I bought this one in the gift shop on board Pacificat Discovery the one time I took the oppourtunity to ride on the Fast Cats. I also bought a Pacificat T-Shirt which I still have.

Man, I hated these things. Nowhere decent to sit, small, crappy outside deck where all the smokers would be smoking, and that interior!! Yeccchh! Bloody awful.

They were a huge disappointment for the riding public. The hype before their roll out was unbelievable, and they were nothing but a let down. I personally have never been so disappointed riding a on ferry as I was on one of the Pacificats.... I wonder if the Maritime Museum in Victoria has updated their exhibit which had a lot of the public relations spoonfed pre-roll out hype. Remember, these things were supposed to cut the crossing time down by so much that the three of them could carry the equivalent of 4 traditional ferries during peak times. We can only dream, right.

While I never rode on one I did tour it while it was on display in North Vancouver, I did not like the outdoor space at all, and the inside looked like a cross between a disco and a Starbucks. Wonder what we would get this time if we got another NDP government? Definitely a scary thought.

I have no disagreement there - especially since it is cheaper for me and less time to drive to the Washington Beaches than it is to take a ferry and drive over to the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Wonder what we would get this time if we got another NDP government? Definitely a scary thought. I think that the fast-cat ferries were more a product of the then premier's autocratic style, rather than of the overall 10-year run of an NDP government. Similar to how the cost overruns and temporary-style construction (which had to be redone in places) of the Coquihalla highway was a product of the then premier's autocratic style (and unrealistic deadline set for completion by Expo's opening), rather than of the overall multi-year run of a SoCred government. Similar to how a fighter-jet program is more a product of current prime minister's autocratic style, rather than of the overall run of the Conservative govt. ...maybe.

Like Translink, perhaps BC Ferries needs a complete forensic audit to see where the bleeding is. But now we are getting off-topic. The next thing you, we will be talking booze again!

Per request via a PM, I scanned in the Pacificat T-Shirt that I have with a scale (in inches). It's basically a Navy Blue shirt with the Pacificat Logo in the upper left corner on the front of the shirt.

I have one of those as well... unfortunately I bought it when I was 10 so it no longer fits quite right. Good party trick though!

I will say, for all the flaws, they had a pretty slick looking bridge.
