Queen of Prince Rupert @ old [Alaska] berth, Fairview Terminal, Prince Rupert - 28 April 1979. This is a new and somewhat improved scan from the one that appears on an earlier page in this thread. Fujichrome slide © JST - Hosted on my Flickr Photo Site - 79-06-6 - VueScan

Has anyone here heard if the rumors are true, and that the QPR is sailing off to Fiji this summer?

I haven't heard anything. However the ship listings on Harlow Marine usually keep up to date with the rumours. As soon as you hear of rumours and check up on the listing, sometimes you'll see "Offer Pending" or "Sold". Right now it's still just up for sale, so until I see any sort of indication on that website, so I'm still thinking she's not going anywhere anytime soon. www.harlowmarine.com/index.php?action=view_piece&id=714&trail=1:1:57:714:3

Word in Victoria is that logistics are being examined now, and she will probably spend several weeks getting ready for the positioning voyage to Suva. Possible locations are Ogden Pt, Cowichan Bay or Esquimalt. Time frame in late May to late June.

Here is yet another 'fresh' scan, this time from Bella Bella. It shows the Queen of Prince Rupert waiting in the early morning fog to discharge passengers. The date: 26 August 1982. There is something notable about this photo too, and again I am going to leave it up to others to figure out just what I am referring to. Certain members (Fluge, Scott, Neil, Mr. DOT,...) should wait a few hours before answering. Kodachrome slide © JST - Hosted on my Flickr Photo Site.

Jim, after people correctly guess the story here, you've got to share your own story of how you happened to end up at that place, at that time.

:)not only is this shot emblimatic of north coast misty conditions, the QPR is framed in a holding pattern after recklessly trying to navigate gunboat channel and is now having to offload passengers to Q of N, the setting is exactly how I remember many times up coast! mrdot.

My story is simply one of coincidence. This happened before BC Ferries brought in the all daylight service on the Inside Passage. I was travelling south, on my own, aboard the Queen of the North. At that time the QPR was running a mixed service to both Haida Gwaii and the Inside Passage. It was, in fact at this time doing an IP trip, running some hours ahead of the QotN, but was also doing the milk run in that it had stops scheduled at both Ocean Falls and the old - in town - passenger only - Bella Bella wharf. At 'bed time' I elected to camp on the outside deck of the QotN, being both cheap & considering myself to be adventurous. I believe that I even pitched a small free-standing tent like they do on the AMHS. At any rate I fell asleep and slept rather well, waking in the morning at first light - maybe 5:30 AM. It was then that I realized why I had slept well. There was very little noise & no ship movement. The ship's engines were idling. We were, in fact not moving, and we were, tied up at the dock in Bella Bella, and had been there for some time. Why? I found out what was going on fairly soon thereafter. It was very foggy, and it was through that fog that I shot that photo of the Rupert coming in with a bruised bottom so that 'she' could transfer her passengers to the QotN. Of course the transfer happened and finally we were under way again, the QotN arriving at Port Hardy more than 6 hours behind schedule. It was after disembarking at Port Hardy that I shot this photo of the QotN.

Just wondering if anyone has heard anything as to who bought the QPR and their plans for her if any. Haven't been out to Deas in ages so don't even know if she's still there or not.

The QPR is still at Deas as of March 5th, 2010, and BCF has not let-loose any plans to move the ship. No sales have been announced either. So for now, she's just a surplus ship, I guess. I still think BCF should unretire her, and bring her back into active service on a route between Tsawwassen and Port Hardy, like the 'North used to do in years past. Sure, it would cost a lot of money to renovate the ship and bring her up to SOLAS standards, but I believe it could be a money-making route, especially if marketed as a cruise instead of an A-to-B ferry. It would also reopen the marine gateway to the North, potentially raising ridership on both the Inside Passage route, the Discovery Passage route, and to a slightly lesser extent, the Haida Gwaii route. Just my views

Thanks for the up-date and I hope you're right as the Harlow Marine website lists the Rupert as sold but don't say to who or for how much. Page 3 of the BC Ferries section of the Evergreen Fleet report that it has been sold to China. That said, I would personnaly offer my help in renovating the old girl as I totally agree with you that the QPR could be a serviceable ship, providing the restoration was done with a clear marketing objective in mind, ie. upgrading/installing cabins etc., and the Tsawwassen and Northward route was properly marketed. The historical problem for BC Ferries with the main Northern Route is the never- solved identity dilemma of what that ship/service should be: ie. plain old ferry boat or cruise ferry modelled after some of the European operations.

Page 3 of the BC Ferries section of the Evergreen Fleet report that it has been sold to China. Actually, that entry is for the Queen of Esquimalt, aka the Princess Jacqueline .I've still got the QPR listed as "For sale."

Yes, if you go to the Harlow Marine website it is now showing the Rupert as sold. Here's a link: tinyurl.com/3vgsn8l

Another case of companies using photos without permission. This will kill photo posting for fun.

Back on February 28, I heard that the sale of QPR to serve within the Fijian Islands was down to just the formal signing. This was news from well within the shipping industry on the coast, and I was involved in talks regarding her departure from Deas and subsequently from the facility where she was to be prepared for the long postioning voyage. I mistakenly posted this on the BC Ferries news board and had my back side paddled as I was not able to reveal the "source", and report thus remained a rumor!! I subsequently posted this on the "Queen of Prince Rupert retirement thread on Feb 28. Since that time, there have been no further dicussions with the potential purchaser, but at present there are still several arrangements in place to facilitate her movements and none have been altered or cancelled.

The Australian government has a current travel advisory for Fiji, warning tourists of lax enforcement of sometimes inadequate safety regulations for passenger and tour vessels. If a tired old boat like the Queen of Prince Rupert were to actually find an active post-BC Ferries career, I suppose it wouldn't be surprising if it was in a place like Fiji.

Here is a telephoto shot of the Queen of Prince Rupert @ the old [Alaska] berth, Fairview Terminal, Prince Rupert - 28 April 1979. This was taken from along the CN tracks close to where the Aqua Train terminal is located. I was on my way south to hike Vancouver Island's West Coast Trail for the first time. :)by this time in my life journey, I was many years removed from my 1966 life on the original B watch of QPR, and well into my second life in Delta planning, but I had never lost my interest in this first life, and continue to think that this was the best looking livery that she ever wore, and certainly better than her last dreadful garb! I beleive my young son met his uncle wetcoast at the Royal Hudson about same time? and the ferries were 20 years on in their coastal experience! :)mrdot.

As of yesterday afternoon, April 18th the QPR is still at Deas. Towering abover her is the Northern Expedition Couldn't get a clear picture as there were train cars all along the way.

Even if she has been sold, I have to say that I doubt she'll be moved anytime soon. Before they do get her out of there, BCF will probably make a news release of some kind, and we'll hear something of her new owners.
