Here's my theory about the naming of the "Queen of Cumberland":
- whereas the village of Cumberland is very small, obscure and not normally thought of being worthy of a ferry name, compared with other coastal towns & cities.
- whereas the Village of Cumberland doesn't front the Ocean at all.
- whereas the Queen of Cumberland was launched in 1991 or 1992 or so.
- whereas the NDP Gov't was in power in BC at the time of the launch.
- whereas the village of Cumberland has a strong history of unions, re the coal mines.
- whereas the Village of Cumberland's most historically significant character was "Mr. Ginger Goodwin", who was a union hero.
- whereas the same NDP Government named a section of the Island Highway as "Ginger Goodwin Way" in honour of this character.
- whereas there is a close relationship between BC Unions and the NDP.
Therefore, do you agree with me that the naming of the "Queen of Cumberland" was politically motivated, and was done by the NDP to honour a strong union town ?
Sandi, you live up there.....what do you think?

This doesn't have alot to do with this topic but what if the Cumbie was ment to handle PR-Comox I mean Cumberland is right beside/in Courtney and Comox although these modifications would have to be done the car and passenger capacity would have to be changed if this were to happen it's like this get the Cumbie lifted to have her ramps down 24-7 strech her and give her better eaterys and a gift shop and better seating by streching the passenger deck either that or get a miniature C-Class built to do it I'll start a topic on these Mini C ideas

I'd love to travel on a modified Cumberland, on Comox-PR. That would be neat.

Wasn't Capilano supposed to go up there all along anyway instead of Cumberland?

That was the original plan. THe Cap couldn't manoever well in a certain area near Earls Cove, so she moved to Bowen Island, and she suites the run well.

Here is some completely useless info for you - Cumberland - is an area just south of the english - scotish boarder and they have a sausage name after the local county (We call the areas counties - where in Canada they are called provinces)
Do we really want a vessel called after a sausage ? Oh yea Cumberland is land locked - no sea - just lakes.
History lesson for the school posters... sorry just kidding

well here are some more ferries named after cities and towns not near the ocean or distance wise cumberland is closer to the ocean then they are. coquitlam, surrey, chilliwack, new westminister, and burnaby. so is there a political motive to the naming of these ships?

I just thought that with naming a section of a highway after Ginger Goodwin, that maybe the naming of the Q-Cumberland was politically motivated as well.
Seeing as how this is a small town, I figured there must be some thought behind why they chose Cumberland for the name.
ps: I was sad to see the "Ginger Goodwin Way" signs taken down from the highway, as soon as the BC Liberals took power. I thought that was a lack of class.

It probably was politically motivated, but that's the nature of politics.
If you don't like it, change it.

hey Strong Skier, Did they make the decision to not put the Cap on route 7 when she was built, back in '91? I found a news release dated August, 2002 that says that the Cap will be re-deployed to route 7 because of the need for a larger ferry on the hsb-bowen route, and to relieve the ageing and costly Queen of Tsawwassen. www.bcferries.com/news/files/02-041_rfi_new_intermediate_vessel.pdf

BC Ferries has been a political football since 1962. There is a tradition of naming vessels after towns, cities or Regions. Cumberland is just one of those. Don't see where politics should enter into it but it does and the Socreds were the masters!

Correction, notmuchlonger, the Socreds ARE the masters. A large portion of the MLAs in BC "Liberal" government ARE former socreds!

Unfortunately, in this province, it does not go without saying. B.C. has the most uninformed voters that I know of.
correction: North America has the most uninformed voters that I know of.

Well you have Premier Bush and we have his poodle President Tony (Blair). So far there has not been any vessel - Ferry that is named after or by this idiot.
So how are they going to name the three new ones? any wild ideas ?
Has anyone seen or eaten a Cumberland Sauage ? They could always put that on the menu. Up North if you ask for the Full english (Breakfast) you get a cumberland sauage with the meal.

Kyle - if my memory is still in one peice - doesn't SS mean "Steam Ship" - so we are going backwards with the naming of the new vessels.
Interesting note: The Royal Navy in the UK call there vessels after towns - the rest of the national fleet normal vessels / ships are all called after a female or she
We have done the town names - what else is left for the new ship's
Pamela Anderson - she comes from the Island - so why call one of the new ferries after her??? "Big Tit's"

Sorry for not been PC Correct on this naming of the ferries - and I apologize to all the female members.
Did you know (Another bit of completely unless info here) but the Sudan of Brunei - his younger brother called his two Floating Gin Palaces TiT 1 and TiT 2 - no bad coming from a Muslim country. (They were good looking boats)
