The Flagship banner theme for the month of June 2013 is Open-Deck ferries. This choice isn't just to peeve certain Washingtonians who are above the idea of an open-deck ferry (satirical comment, meant in fun), but it is a broad category for most of us. Any VEHICLE ferry, salt or freshwater, in North America is allowed. Present serving or retired. What is an open-deck ferry, for the purposes of this here contest? - At least approx 40%-50% of the car deck space needs to be uncovered and open to the rain elements. This would allow inclusion of BC Ferries such as Capilano, Cumberland, Island Sky, and all the Ks. - Queen of Alberni current configuation would NOT be included in this, even though a good portion of he upper vehicle deck is uncovered. But pre-conversion 1-deck Q'Alberni photos are eligible. Your photo needs to include that open deck space. ie. you can't just nominate a photo of the wheelhouse of an open-deck ship. It has to show that the ship is an open-deck ship.
Members may submit up to three (3) photos. Usual size restrictions apply. For further information, please see our Forum Flagship rules, located here. Nominations will end on Thursday May 30, 2013 at 9:00 PM PDT. Voting will commence shortly thereafter. If you want to do a nomination, don't leave it to the last minute. Double check your spelling. Make sure that your full-size link works. Have fun.

- Queen of Alberni would NOT be included in this, even though a good portion of he upper vehicle deck is uncovered. What about pictures of the Queen of Alberni taken before she was lifted in 1984? Prior to that, the Alberni was pretty much an open-deck ferry. On another note, now is when I wish I took pictures of the Keller Ferry, Martha S, when I was there at Lake Roosevelt last summer! But anyway, I'll be looking forward to seeing what other people enter in this contest.

Would the RHODODENDRON, OLYMPIC, and VASHON be eligible? Probably not the old Wooden-Electrics, or maybe?
Would BW pics be acceptable?
Good subject for this month.

For your question on specific ships, I've looked at Rhody photos, and although there is some open-deck at each end, it's only a bit of open deck. I think it's safe to conclude that Rhody (and others like her) are not what I had intended for this "Open Deck" flagship category. - sorry, but the Rhody style would make a great future theme for flagships.

And the other Washingtonian's question: What about the Christine Anderson and the STII? They have part of the deck covered, but most (although not sure for 50%) is open. I'm guessing that the Tenake won't be eligible for this, but I'm still asking. As for the rest of us Washingtonians, the best options would be to go see the county ferries such as the Guemes, Whatcom Chief and the Charlie Wells.

I'm guessing that the Tenake won't be eligible for this, but I'm still asking. Tenaka is eligible, because of her forward car-deck that is open, and the middle-lane stern that is mostly open. Re the Pierce County cousins, both are eligible. There is a lot of open deck on either end of those ships. Thanks for asking and for appreciating that it's not a precise science

Mr. Horn, Would this be acceptable: Usk Ferry on Skeena River, seen here high with spring snow melt, above Terrace, BC - 24 May 2010 Yes, very acceptable. I had the river reaction ferries in mind when I chose this category.

I wonder if anyone has pictures of the Kulshan, which thus far has been WSF's only open-deck ferry. (and of course, it didn't last long.) I'd really be happy if someone like EGfleet (or anyone else) would be willing to enter photos into this contest.
