A "somebody said something that got me thinking" moment:
We like ferry boats. We know everything about them. But what do we do to get the next generation behind us interested in ferries? Take them on a ferry!
Our 8-year-old grandson was up visiting last week (with my son & family, of course) from Portland, and he had mentioned that he had never been on a ferryboat. Really? Never been on a ferry? Well, something had to be done about that! So we immediately went down to take a round trip on the Walla Walla.
Remember when we first rode a ferry and were fascinated with the operations. You bet Johnathan was:

You know just how many times you watched the people and the cars get on the ferry..... And you're still fascinated by that today......
And you know how interesting it was being just able to see over the railing to look for seaweed and jellyfish and perhaps a real fish.....

But it wasn't about the things on a ferry that I find interesting. From the eyes of an 8-year-old, that big relief map on the wall might have been the highlight of the trip:

He was sort of ho-hum about looking at a passing cruise ship and the ferry coming the other way. But he spent 15 minutes showing me all the places on the map where he had been. And even showing me some of the places not on the map.
So..... If you get the chance to show a kid just how fun a ferry can be, don't hesitate to take them on that trip. It doesn't have to be a big production. The ferry down the street may be just fine!
