A new thread for the fleet of passenger boat, and the fabulous history and scenery of Maligne Lake. This is in Jasper National Park, Alberta. For starters, here is the tour boat company website: MALIGNE LAKE HERE--------- I visited this operation on September 9, 2014, and I will be posting various photos and video in the days/weeks ahead. This photo by Mrs. Horn from today shows the main purpose of the Maligne Lake boat tour: Spirit Island. - this island scene gained publicity in a Kodak photo contest, with it displayed at New York City's Grand Central Station. Peter Gales story-------------- ps: this tour boat thread is similar to what we already have for the MV International on Upper Waterton Lake MV International

The fleet at Maligne Lake, at the start of the day - September 9, 2014 We rode "Chaba III" shown here, with the historic Curly Phillips' boathouse in the background Chaba III at Spirit Island - the regular cruise has just a 15 minute stop-over here. Leaving Spirit Island area, headed back to base. Another tour boat is shown headed to Spirit Island ---------------------- The view of Spirit Island from the dock. Not the classic view, but it was my view.

If I recall correctly, at least some of the vessels in that Maligne Lake fleet were built by a boat builder in Sidney, BC. Did you get any information on that subject, Mr. Horn?

Nothing learned about the fleet by me, yesterday (other than the names of the ships, size, etc) - But seeing them first-hand has got me interested in eventually doing some research. (but not yet) cheers from crisp Jasper

Here's my video of the various boats that are part of Maligne Lake tour boat operations
- from September 9, 2014.
...it was fun to observe all the comings and goings of the tour boats, as the arrived at and left their home base.

...and here is my on-board video of Maligne Lake tour boats. We were on "Chaba III." This is their 3rd boat named after the local first-nations word for "Beaver." The first-nations people called Maligne Lake "Chaba Imne" which means "Beaver Lake."
Chaba was also the name of Mary Schaffer's raft on the lake.

The fleet at Maligne Lake boat tours, in Jasper National Park. - seen by me in September 2014 -------------------------- Ready for the day's action: - the fleet is a mix of some older standardized boats, plus some newer (and larger and better) ones that are different from the old standard. Not all the boats are running on this late-in-season day, but all are needed for the busy days of July-August. The fleet is sized to maximize revenue in the short peak-demand season. ------------- Hey Wett Coast, this here is no ordinary boat....

Okay, the boat looks fancier than the other boats. The photo is ordinary, but the photographer is extraordinary. Is there a boat named Hunter for Peace? BTW, my wife & I are thinking about canoeing the length of Maligne Lake next summer. I could be at Spirit Peninsula at dawn looking (hopefully not) at cloud right down to the deck.

A few more shots of my visit to Maligne Lake in mid September, 2014. Inside CHABA III: The essential cabin documents: Transport Canada and Mary Schaffer View near Spirit Island: September grey-hair and grey-weather Even without boats and mountain peaks, a photo of Maligne Lake is pleasing

So I, along with my other half Elizabeth, did the cruise down Maligne Lake on August 30th. I did this once previously, with my Mom & Dad, 32 years earlier. It seems that I got better weather than did 'Mr Horn', aka LLM, on his trip five years ago, but the weather was well short of perfect. We were on the boat Samson Beaver, on a 'premium cruise', which gives you 30 minutes at the Spirit Island viewpoint. A few of my photos follow, with the last one being my son Ben's taken last Boxing Day. He skied all the way down there & back ...
This place, b-t-w, is certainly one of the supreme beauty spots in the Canadian Rockies!

Thanks for these photographs and the stories. Myself and Mrs. Horn had cold weather in mid-September. But it was still beautiful to experience.
