For April 2015's flagship, we will honor the various retired ships from the Evergreen Fleet, and other fleets in Washington. Which ships? The retired ones from the WSF fleet, listed HERE- No, Evergreen State is not included, because it's not yet really retired. - No Hiyu either. Also THESE ships. - But for the Black Ball ones that were later moved to British Columbia, it is only for when they were working in Washington, or earlier. - ie. no Kahloke or Langdale Queen working Howe Sound. What types of action or inaction? - in-service (anywhere, except for the Blackball ones in BC), out of service, on a beach, up a river, in Alaska mud, in disrepair, or just a few days before scrapping (hint hint, SolDuc). What types of photos? - Photos that you or family/friends have taken, or that you own in your collection. ie. from the Joe Williamson collection, for instance, where you own the photo. ------------------ You may submit up to three (3) photos. Usual size restrictions apply. For further information, please see our Forum Flagship rules, located here. - NOTE: 1200x340 size is the best practices size, that we encourage you to use. Nominations will end on March 30th at 6:00 PM PST. Voting will commence later that evening and will conclude sometime in evening of March 31st.

Though I admit finding photos of the Quillayute in Washington waters is a little more on the rare side.

I wanted this flagship theme to honor ships in their Washington service. I figured that if a bunch of Langdale Queen or Sechelt Queen photos were nominated, it would distract from the point of the theme. The Washington ferries and their issues are comprising most of our ongoing ferry-forum discussions these days, and so I want to honor that with this theme. And we haven't had a focus on retired Washington ships specifically before, so this theme was due.

Here are my entries of photos I've acquired through the years: MV OLYMPIC as taken by Harre Demoro in 1968. ENTRY1From my scrapbook, we see the MV KALAKALA and MV ILLAHEE both pose for the photographer together promoting the 1962 Seattle World's Fair in this 1961 scene. ENTRY2Harre Demoro's camera captures the MV KLAHANIE taking a break at North Vashon Terminal on September 22, 1967. ENTRY3

Member FNS has some great photos in his collection. He's asked if he can add a couple more photos to the nominations mix, and I've gladly agreed. So when you see his "Entry 4" & "Entry 5," you'll know what that's all about.
----------
Nominations close on Monday evening at 6:00pm, PDT.

Is may gonna be a month where people have photos to submit? What kind of comment is this? I am looking forward to voting and viewing all of these photos with great historic value. Different themes have different responses. This was a month that appealed to members who possess these historic photos in their collections, which granted, isn't most of us. This is a theme where a majority of us will enjoy through viewing.

This is a theme where a majority of us will enjoy through viewing. I wish I could add more to this month's offering as I have more to share. But, I think I'll hold off until this theme comes again ( RETIRED WSF FERRIES). I stuck to this month's theme with retired ferries IN WSF LIVERY. Next month (April 2015), the theme contributing round should be of COAST GUARD SHIPS for the MAY FFS. We all know another term for May 1, as the CG responds to situations when this is used. US and Canadian ships can be nominated as well as other countries. For June, let's do one on PRIVATE AND NON-WSF FERRIES, CURRENT AND RETIRED, OF PUGET SOUND. I have a few of the SAN DIEGO and others have photos of the WHATCOM CHIEF, GUEMES, Pierce County, et al. The HIYU could be included if her ownership title gets handed over to Whatcom County this Spring (pics of her must be on the Lummi Island run). Black Ball ferries can be included as well (even those that became WSF ferries). Just my thoughts.

While each of us may have a limited historic selection of photos, brought together we have quite a diverse collection. A machine is more valuable than the sum of its parts.Re. your suggestions: Thanks for those ideas. I am not sure what my fellow staff have in mind for themes for these upcoming months, but I know your suggestions will be taken into consideration - perhaps not for the immediate future, but in the long term certainly.
