After backtracking north of Los Angeles for some time, probably due to rough seas, she is now zooming along at eleven knots, and will most likely have to take shelter for a while with more heavy weather hitting the Bay area tomorrow. Island 6 is having a more challenging run up the California coast than her previous sister did.

I was looking at Ship trackers and I saw that Island 5 was changed to "ISLAND KWIGWIS", must be the new name of the vessel.

I received an email asking "Is Island 6 disabled? Seems to have stopped just north of San Francisco and now going south with a tug."
I checked and looks to be something going on with one tug in front for awhile, now behind, and a 2nd tug labelled "SFB HARBOR OPS" nearby.

It looks like two vessels are closing in on the ISLAND 6. The tug DELTA LINDA and the Pilot Vessel SAN FRANCISCO. Could we see history in the making?

There's heavy weather coming up in that area, and she was taking cover in Drakes Bay, north of San Francisco. Maybe she'll be laying low until things blow over.

"San Francisco, here we come!"This might be the first time a double-ended ferry using its own engine and propellers is entering San Francisco Bay since the former San Diego ferry MV CORONADO II did in 1972. The CORONADO II was used in the filming of Warner Brothers 1972 movie comedy "What's Up, Doc?". The pier acting as a ferry dock, and dressed up like one, was definitely not one. No wingwalls, no side dolphins, no transfer span with apron. Cars ended up in the drink. Guess which one floats! This was the ending scenes of the great car chase near the end of the movie. ISLAND 6 and the Golden Gate Bridge. You could somewhat see them through the mist. Passing by Alcatraz Island. A small part of the Str EUREKA could be seen with her steering guide. The tug DELTA LINDA, I guess, was escorting the ferry. Now the ISLAND 6 is heading north. A very historic day on San Francisco Bay. First time a double-ended ferry has entered the bay under its own power for a long time.

She might be in San Francisco Bay until Friday, given the forecast. At this rate, the Seaspan Trader might catch up; she's now halfway between Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas, doing ten to eleven knots.

Here's a video of the ISLAND 6 and the tug DELTA LINDA as they passed by Hyde Street Pier and Alcatraz Island. This EarthCam video was captured with my camera.
Historic moment in San Francisco Bay's maritime history.

I wonder if two boat service on Campbell River to Quadra Island and Nanaimo Harbour to Gabriola Island will start on May 16, 2022because the schedule page ends on May 15, 2022 and itβs spring of 2022.

Anyone want to calculate the relative speeds and predict a winner?

Seaspan trader might be having fuel issues, was the word on the street. Island 6 Is trying to shoot the gap and might make it Tuesday otherwise she will have to tuck into Oregon.

Anyone want to calculate the relative speeds and predict a winner? Yesterday I would have bet a Westerly sandwich on Island 6 making Victoria first, but Seaspan Trader has definitely closed the gap, with both vessels now off southern Oregon, and the ' Trader outpacing her smaller rival by a knot or so. It would be fun if the two companies staged a turn of the twentieth century style race to the Victoria finish line.
