Was just searching through the Damen Shipyards website to see if there is any new info on the new Island Class Ferries and came across something interesting! products.damen.com/en/ranges/road-ferry/drfe-9819-e3If you look at the website above, the ship pictures looks to be in BC Ferries colours and it looks like the ship may have been photoshopped to appear on the BC Coast. These ships look very similar to the Island Class vessels that should be arriving soon but wondering if we will have another upcoming announcement regarding the purchase and build of these electric ships (maybe for the Gabriola Island - Nanaimo route where electricity infrastructure can be installed in Nanaimo Harbour?) Looking forward to your comments

My guess is that the 9819-E3 was Damen's design submission for the Bowen/Mayne/Powell River Queen/Quinsam replacement project before more Salish and Island class became the preferred solution.

This class however looks very similar to the Island Class vessels though. I think that possibly these vessels may be purchased at some point in the next few years but will be considered part of the same class of vessels. Here are potential routes that I could envision for fully electric ferries: Nanaimo-Gabriola (can charge in Nanaimo harbour) Brentwood Bay - Mill Bay (can charge in Mill Bay) Crofton - Vesuvius (build charging infrastructure in Crofton) Maybe even Campbell River to Quadra Island Just a bunch of very short routes that could have frequent charging in between and are all relatively sheltered passages. Any thoughts?

I don’t see a need for or even replacement built for Brentwood Bay to Mill Bay route. I also think that Crofton to Vesuvius will also get two Island Class vessels.

There might be a change in thinking, or perhaps a delay in going all electric. In the past week there was an explosion and serious fire aboard such a ferry in Norwegian waters, the cause a battery "run away". I read of this while in Europe and do not have any more information.

I could see BC Ferries following the plan of putting two boats on 20 minutes routes for Crofton to Vesuvius route.

And once charging of vessels at terminals become reliable; all major routes while get electric vessels.

The technology to charge vessels already exists except just not installed not in British Columbia. The Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Sweden, and Norway are years ahead in many respects in regards to electrification and renewable energy.
It is important to note that if the electricity is still coming from the burning of fossil fuels you have no net decrease in emissions. I think BC Hydro has to invest much more than it currently is in Wind and Solar in order to even make this a viable option for B.C. ferries to consider.

Island Class boats have a slightly different Battery than the one that lit on fire, there's also a thermal cut-off where if the pack gets too hot it disconnects from the board. Also if you look on the STBD side of the ships there are 2 openings that are designed to vent from the packs to the outside.
