Nice to see that hull looking nice! She was getting a little faded and tired looking last summer.

Hey guys, I don't know about you, but I was severely pissed off with the closure of Kits base (Canadian Coast Guard.) Speaking as a member of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (Formerly known as the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary-Pacific) I have deep respect for CCG manned stations and the amount of training and physical fitness that their crew have compared to us volunteer SAR members. I myself may be a professional mariner in my day job and excellent at navigation and what have you, but I am no match at climbing a shore cliff face with a basket stretcher and full medical kit. In fact, most of my unit are nearly retired or retired people with some degree of interest in recreational boating or wanting to pitch in our community. I don't see us as in any shape or form close to that of the members of a CCG manned station such as Kitsilano base. So, I am pleading with you, to sign this petition for the federal government to re-open Kits Base. Sure the Safe Guarding of the Arctic mineral resources is important, but so are the lives of men and woman in Canadian waters. If you weren't aware, The Harper government has closed a few bases across the country in order to help " Keep the cheque book balanced" while opening a base up in East coast Labrador, to provide berthing of ships which will focus of providing a Canadian presence in the Arctic... Please, sign the petition to re-open Kitsilano base, in the busiest harbour in Canada. www.change.org/p/re-open-kitsilano-coast-guard-base?recruiter=148304570&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=share_page&utm_term=mob-xs-action_alert-no_msg&fb_ref=Default

Bamfield (west coast, Vancouver Island) Canadaian Coast Guard Lifesaving Station with the CCGC Bamfield in the foreground (I am not entirely certain about the name but for a Google search) - 10 May 1979. Any guesses where I took this photo from? I had just finished hiking the West Coast Trail. © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

That photo was taken after I did my second West Coast Trail trip in 1987. This was 1979. But I did shoot the above photo from the deck of the lovely Lady Rose ... I should do the Alberni Inlet & Barkley Sound tour again one of these years, only this time on the lovely Frances Barley ... Currently we are saving for a trip to Brazil.

I see a news item on CBC news this morning that there are "concerns" regarding "issues" with one or more of the intermediate sized vessels being built in the east for the DND and Coastguard. Hmm? Where has all the expertise gone from Canadian shipyards that at one time were capable of turning out the best ships afloat?

The east? Depending on what you mean by "intermediate", all major CCG ships are to be built in Vancouver, beginning with the offshore fisheries science vessels.
As for expertise, "gone" is what happens when you follow a boom-bust cycle of shipbuilding - what keeps the shipyard workers in the shipyards if the shipyards get no work? That's the whole point of NSPS - to end this "let's build a lot of ships really quickly in 5 years and give them no work for the next 15" cycle once and for all. The challenge is getting successive governments to follow through on the plan when they come to power.

From: CBC News - Politics - Nova Scotia Posted January 27, 2016 9 Coast Patrol Vessels built by the Irving Shipyard in Halifax....... I believe this story will support my reference to the geographic location. I don't believe I raised questions about vessels as yet to be constructed in Vancouver.

Ah, ok, you're talking about the midshore patrol vessels (fairly small at some 250-300t) of the Hero class, which have been built and predate NSPS. Your use of "intermediate" and "being built" made me think you were referring to a current project of a much larger size.

CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier tied up at home base in Victoria Harbour - 31 December 2015. Washington State's Olympic Mountains form the backdrop for this pic. This was taken on New Year's Eve afternoon while my wife & I enjoyed a walk along the West Song Way walkway along Victoria's Inner Harbour. A great place for walking & picture-taking! © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

First two major modules of the first Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel have been assembled outside at Seaspan Vancouver:
Anyone with a long lens able to catch a shot from across the Inlet?

Wartsila has been awarded the contract to re-engine the 1100 class of icebreaking buoy tenders. Six vessels in total, one of which being the Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The class was built in the mid 1980s with ALCO main engines, which were already fairly old technology at that time. The CG has no current plans for replacements for the 1100 class, and the hulls are in pretty good condition, so the decision was made to re-power. www.marineinsight.com/shipping-news/wartsila-modernize-vessels-canadian-coast-guard/

A heads up to those who may be interested. The first OFSV, CCGS Sir John Franklin will be floated tomorrow or saturday at Vancouver Shipyard. An inclining experiment will be conducted on Sunday, and then she will be towed to Ogden Point in Victoria for final outfitting. If you're on the water or nearby, it might be worth checking out.

The Franklin is now in the water, next to the drydock:
Nice of them to put where spotters can easily photograph her from the pier!
