Interesting that they bothered with operational radar (though it is understandable from a regulatory and a safety point of view). I wonder what certifications are required to act as a "Master" on this thing?

I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere (I did a quick search and couldn't find anything definitive) but does anyone know how BCF plans on delivering these new vessels? Will they be brought up to SOLAS standards in order to sail from Gdansk under their own power or will they be delivered under tow or heavy lift? I think that SOLAS is only a requirement for a trip involving passengers. A delivery voyage from ship-builder to BC Ferries wouldn't be impacted by SOLAS. Although the 3 Coastal-class ships, and Northern Expedition were delivered under their own power (with a special wave-breaker installed on bow of the 3 Coastals), I wonder if the 3 Salish class ships are too small to endure that type of voyage. Speculation aside, I haven't heard anything regarding the delivery method. ----- ps: I love your avatar photo. welcome here. Thank you for the reply and the welcome. I heard that the Seaspan tugs built in Turkey actually came over under their own power so these Salish vessels may not be restricted from an oceanic journey based on size alone. In case you were interested, SOLAS does apply to vessels other than passenger vessels. I think that generally "non-convention" vessels trading in Canada are built in such a way as to approximate SOLAS requirements (especially in the case of a vessel such as a ferry) but I do know that there are some minor differences. For example I worked on a cargo vessel that was delivered from China and had to meet SOLAS standards for that voyage but then worked as a "non-convention" vessel domestically after that. Among the upgrades for that single voyage that were ultimately removed due to their added cost were GMDSS (additional radio) equipment and our enclosed lifeboat.
