It has been down right awful. on the Clinton Mukilteo run. We have had the Chelan however, then again the same Capt that shall remain nameless that has been just as slow with the Chelan as he always is with the Tok. Every trip we make he is right about 13 mins late, and it gets tiring.. Now with being down to one boat all day it has been a perfect storm. Avoid head to Whidbey at all cost! All past tense now: From: Washington State Ferries <WSFAlert@wsdot.wa.gov> [Edit Address Book] Subject: Ferry Alert: Muk/Clin - Update - M/V Kittitas Returns to Service - Regular 2-Boat Schedule Date: Jul 7, 2017 7:02 PM Following generator repairs, the M/V Kittitas returns to service with the Clinton 7:05 pm sailing to Mukilteo. This restores the regular two-boat schedule.

I see that WSF has the Kittitas docked at Kingston. Is she scheduled for maintenance up north soon?

So this is why the Bainbridge run shut down last night: Gunman on boat shot by officers after firing shots at shore along Bainbridge IslandBAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. -- A gunman on a boat who had just stripped naked hours after firing several shots at the shoreline of Bainbridge Island was wounded by police officers after pointing the gun at them. There are no reports of anyone else injured. The city of Bainbridge Island announced just after 1 a.m. that the active shooter situation is over. The gunman began firing shots from a boat anchored in the waters of Eagle Harbor around 9 p.m., and when officers arrived, he began aiming his shots toward them, says Bainbridge Island Police spokesperson Kellle Stickney. The gunfire lasted about two hours, then the shots stopped just before 11 p.m, said Bainbridge Island Police Chief Matthew Hammer. Hammer said there were also reports that other boats were shot at. As King County's Guardian One police helicopter hovered overhead, police used measures such as flash bangs and some sort of smoking devices to get the gunman to surrender, according to witnesses at the scene. The gunman then appeared on the boat's deck in the nude about 12:30 a.m., and climbed into a dinghy behind the boat, according to a KOMO photographer at the scene. The gunman climbed back into the cabin of the main boat, emerged with a rifle and aimed it at the officers, the photographer said. Police then opened fire, striking the man. His condition is not known. Bainbridge Island and Bremerton police, the FBI and the Coast Guard were among the agencies involved. Witness Lisa Skelton told KOMO News the boat had been moored out in the harbor for about two weeks. She said they saw the man come outside his boat, fire his gun, the go down into the cabin to reload, and start firing again. She said she could hear the man saying something about the cops coming and 'I own them, let them come...' " Washington State Ferries spokesperson Brian Mannion told KOMO News the gunfire erupted near one of their repair yards but everyone was accounted for. All ferry service was suspended along the Bainbridge Island/Seattle ferry run for about 90 minutes as police investigated the nearby gunfire. Ferry service resumed just after 11 p.m. KOMO News' Kristen Drew was having dinner with friends in a sailboat near Eagle Harbor when she noticed police moving around docks with guns drawn. "I looked over at a dock nearby and saw an officer with a gun drawn and people running toward shore," Drew said. "I overheard an officer say, 'those are not fireworks' as the officer continued on to another boat. "Periodically throughout dinner, we could hear what sounded like fireworks, but now given the situation, obviously we now know they weren’t. My friends and I got into the sailboat, turned off the lights and sheltered in place." komonews.com/news/local/breaking-active-shooter-situation-in-bainbridge-island

Can't imagine the lines in Anacortes are very good right now. Anacortes probably isn't that bad, since it's Sunday. More concerning are the eastbound loads from the islands. These two cam pics at Orcas say it all: Glad I'm not up there this weekend!

Looks like Yakima is down for the count. Vessel Watch shows her off Whidbey Island right now heading south. Wonder which vessel is going to replace her in the islands tomorrow. Now for the good news: Tacoma is back up and running.

Now for the good news: Tacoma is back up and running. Well, bad news, there isn't actually a spare vessel to replace the Yakima anyways. Kitsap - out for engine repairs Kittitas - drydock until 8/18

My recommendation would be to nix Sidney and have Elwha replace Yakima until another vessel can be freed up. The schedule could be adjusted a little in the morning to allow for stops at Lopez. The 6:25am Anacortes to Friday Harbor departure could leave a little earlier and stop at Lopez en-route, and the 7:35am departure from Orcas to Anacortes could make a Lopez stop to pick up the eastbound traffic. Have no idea what they are going to do, but this seems like an obvious solution to me.

Yes, not a good time to travel to the Islands. The Yakima has already been taken to Eagle Harbor. (Which is never a good sign.) Kitsap will not be ready for at least another week. There is no boat available to replace her... and now the Sealth is out for steering issues. Pity they've already started stripping the Klahowya of everything useful... she'd have come in handy right about now.

Seems to me like a modified Spring schedule would make sense. In general, run a spring Friday schedule daily, with the following modifications to close a few gaps and prevent the last vessel of the day to any location from becoming earlier:
-The 11:05 from Friday Harbor makes an 11:50 stop at Lopez. -The 13:55 Anacortes-Orcas runs daily, pulls out while the inter-island boat loads and unloads, then pulls back in for its (likely slightly delayed) 15:15 return trip to Anacortes. Advertise an unreservable Orcas transfer to make up for the loss of the 13:50 inbound trip from Friday Harbor, should excess room be unavailable on the international run/for people without passports. Possibly add a Lopez stop. -20:55 from Anacortes to Shaw and Orcas pushed back to 21:00, Added stop at Lopez. 10:05 Return from Orcas would be delayed. -22:05 from Friday Harbor to Anacortes: Added stops at Orcas, Shaw, and Lopez. -22:30 from Anacortes to Friday Harbor pushed back to 23:00.

Could we call on the retired QUEEN OF BURNABY to do the ANA-SID run? Or, has she been stripped of all essential gear at Deas VMC for her after-life? That would free up a vessel for the domestic runs.

PLEASE tell me you are joking. QoBurnaby was already on several Transport Canada exemptions during her last months of operation. Never mind that she hasn't been internationally certified for 20 years. There are no circumstances in which she will ever carry paying passengers again in North America. She's done. Accept it.

WSF has released a new temporary schedule for the San Juan Islands while Yakima is out of service. It's full of errors, but I imagine it was written hastily. I'm assuming this is going to be the schedule until either Yakima and/or Kitsap are repaired. If Kitsap gets fixed first, I'm guessing it will go to Mukilteo-Clinton, releasing Chelan to come back to the islands and assume the #1 slot (international route), and Elwha will become #2 (Yakima's assignment). www.wsdot.wa.gov/NR/rdonlyres/ED6DC65D-EC3C-44F1-8E16-85E5187B99CA/0/AnaSJsTempSched71817.pdf

This whole turn of events (along with the events of many past Julys) should scream out to whomever it is that is making such decisions:
"DON'T RETIRE THE HYAK UNTIL OLYMPIC 5 COMES IN!"
(And come to think of it, Make Olympic 5 SOLAS compliant and retire the Elwha instead)

(And come to think of it, Make Olympic 5 SOLAS compliant and retire the Elwha instead) The 5th Olympic, if funded, is scheduled to retire Elwha and the plan is to have it meet SOLAS standards. That was discussed a little while ago in this thread: ferriesbc.proboards.com/thread/8483/olympic-class-144s-design-construction?page=48

While on the Tokitae today the ramp at Mukilteo was not working and Chelan was stuck for 20 mins. First was told, we are heading to Edmonds to be able to disembark. As we have changed from facing Everett and started to Edmonds, we are then told we have to Go back to Clinton as the crossing is being cancelled until further notice. I was on the phone with WSF and 2 people on the Senate Transportation Committee before we arrived in Clinton. We pulled into Clinton and they told the Deck hand at that time "radio your Capt your going back to Mukilteo!" I normally give everyone at WSF a HUGE thank you! for all their hard work and their many hours. However, today showed the worst case in judgement on anyone part for telling the passengers 3 different stories all over the PA system. Today showed a real lack in PR and over all emergence planning. Oh I forgot to ad here we had a Medical on-board in this crossing too.
